How to stay safe during power outages caused by winter storms

No description found

As Winter Storm Harlow continues to impact the region, Appalachian Power urges residents to prioritize safety during power outages. With freezing rain and ice causing hazardous conditions, it’s essential to take precautions to protect yourself and your family.

Stay away from downed lines: Avoid sparking equipment or downed lines and anything they may touch. This applies to children and pets as well. Never remove debris that’s within 10 feet of a power line.

Protect your appliances: Unplug major appliances to safeguard them when power is restored. Leave a light switch turned on so you know when power is back.

Use generators safely: Refuel heaters, lamps, and generators outside, away from flames or sparks. Wipe up fuel spills immediately. Inform Appalachian Power if you’re using a generator to protect yourself and line workers.

Ensure proper ventilation: Never operate lanterns, heaters, or fuel-fired stoves without proper ventilation. Avoid burning charcoal indoors, as it releases poisonous carbon monoxide.

Handle candles with care: Don’t let children carry candles or oil lamps to prevent accidents.
