Roanoke County man charged with the murder of his former girlfriend

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A Roanoke County man has been arrested in connection to Monday's murder in the city of Roanoke.

Police responded to the 2600 block of Avalon Avenue NW on Monday at 5:29 p.m., after a neighbor found 43-year-old Tiffany Early Carroll dead inside the home.

Evidence at the scene indicated her death was a homicide. Officers interviewed witnesses and gathered potential physical evidence at the scene.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives developed 44-year-old Steven Ray Hartman, of Roanoke County, as a suspect.

Officers found Hartman in the 1100 block of 16th Street SE and arrested him without incident, and charged him with one count of second-degree murder.

Police say he had been involved in a relationship with Carroll. Officers also served him with three outstanding warrants from Roanoke County.

Hartman was taken to the Roanoke City Jail.
