South County Softball League celebrates opening day

Alyssa Rae was on hand as the SCSL kicked off their season

Roanoke – Opening day for the South County Softball League was held Saturday at Darrell Shell Park. Coaches, players, parents and fans all came out to kick off the season.

Alyssa Rae was on hand to emcee the event. Players aging from "mimi-mites" which is 8 and under, all the way to 16 years old were announced before play started. After the pledge of allegiance, Cecilla Alouf sang the national anthem.

Evan and Mattie Rogers threw out the ceremonial first pitch in honor of their father, Chris Rogers, who passed away last year. SCSL president Karen Griffith was a big part of putting the event together and looks forward to it every year.

"I've been doing it a long time but the excitement is still there. "Just seeing a new generation come through, I'm now seeing players that have played years ago, their children are now playing, I have a grandchild playing now. I get a little emotional over it because I think it's a great opportunity for girls to learn the team sport, learn the team spirit and obviously I'm partial to softball," Griffith said.
