Virginia State Police is currently investigating a vehicle crash that injured a Wythe County Sheriff’s Deputy on I-77 Wednesday afternoon.

A Smyth County deputy was laid to rest today - a little more than a week after he was shot and killed following a traffic stop.

A procession is set to begin at 11:45 a.m. today for the fallen Smyth County Deputy.

A New River Valley nonprofit hosted a car show fundraiser Saturday in honor of a fallen Pulaski County deputy.

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. – A man is in a Southwest Virginia jail after leading police on a high-speed chase, according to the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office. At about 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday, a Smyth County deputy monitoring southbound traffic on Interstate 81 clocked a vehicle going 103 mph. The chase went 24 miles down I-81, from mile marker 54, near Atkins, to mile marker 30, near Glade Spring. He is currently being held at the Abingdon Regional Jail without bond pending an arraignment in the Smyth County General District Court. Smyth County deputies were assisted by officers from the Chilhowie Police Department and the Virginia State Police.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – A Bedford County deputy is alive after she lost control of her patrol vehicle and rolled down an embankment. According to the Bedford County Sheriff Department, the single-car crash happened shortly after 8pm Monday. The deputy was responding to an assault in the Goodview area of the county, when the vehicle lost traction off the edge of the road and drove off the shoulder. “This is a very windy, curving road and that’s one of the hazards, if you would, in Bedford County. But one thing about our deputies is they drive about 300 miles a shift,” said Sheriff Mike Miller.

The deputy managed to open their doors, freeing three inmates who rushed to help the heavily bleeding deputy and call for aid. The inmates noticed our deputy appeared to be feeling poorly as he conducted his security procedures in the housing unit. Three inmates rushed out of their rooms to render aid to our deputy, who lost consciousness once again. These inmates came to his aid because our deputy, like most law enforcement officers, treats people with the dignity they deserve. These inmates had no obligation whatsoever to render aid to a bleeding, vulnerable deputy, but they didn’t hesitate.
