Two Danville City Council members are vying for the 49th District delegate seat being vacated by one of Virginia’s longest-serving delegates, Republican Danny Marshall.

Danville residents and colleagues expressed shock and support after City Councilman Lee Vogler was severely injured in a brutal attack at his workplace Wednesday, where an assailant doused him with gasoline and set him ablaze.

Republican Del. Danny Marshall is retiring after representing the area in Richmond for more than two decades. The GOP is seeking to hold onto the seat, while Democrats eye on opportunity.

In addition to the statewide races, several House of Delegates districts are holding primaries.

Dr. Gary Miller announced his candidacy for the Virginia House of Delegates in the 49th District Tuesday.

DANVILLE, Va. Danvilles Vice Mayor is urging people to take the coronavirus seriously. The number of new cases was dropping in the city; however, its started to increase. In the prior two weeks, the city was averaging less than half of that with about 25 new cases daily. Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller is a cardiologist and said he had a patient die from COVID-19 last week and has another patient whos sick and may die. He also said a local nurse was part of two families vacationing in Myrtle Beach recently that shared a house and there are now 11 coronavirus cases between the two families.

DANVILLE, Va. – A casino in Danville is still far from a sure bet, which is why the Danville Regional Foundation decided to do a study. The Danville Regional Foundation's study calculated tax revenue for the city based on state tax rates of 10 and 15 percent. DANVILLE, Va. - With talk of a recession after Wall Street's rough week last week, some Danville City Council members say their city is better prepared compared to the last time recession hit. Danville City Council members who were on city council when the recession hit in 2008 say the city's economy has diversified and a lot of effort has been made to revitalize the river district. so we feel that if another recession was to hit this area, we're in a better position, much better position, to survive that and to move forward," Councilman Sherman Saunders said. "In 2008, we were in a bad position when that recession hit," Miller said. "In 2004, Dan River closed...so we were in a recession here and then the big recession hit in 2008.
