US-Canada border decision looms in playoffs for NHL
AP Photo/Chris Seward)A year after the pandemic temporarily shut down the NHL, a handful of roadblocks remain to handing out the Stanley Cup again this season โ including the U.S.-Canada border. The border remains closed to nonessential travel, an issue the NHL addressed before the 2021 season began in January by realigning its divisions. But the league has a decision looming on what to do when a Canadian team faces a U.S. opponent in the third round of the playoffs. Talks are ongoing with Canadian government officials, though nothing needs to be settled yet since cross-border play won't happen until mid-June. โWeโve got a little bit of time to deal with this,โ Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said during a video interview Thursday.

24 North Carolina State (8-3) is a 2 ยฝ-point underdog against Kentucky (4-6) in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, a number the Wolfpack consider a slight heading into Saturday's game in Jacksonville. 2017 ban on local LGBT ordinances ends in North Carolina
This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistribu)RALEIGH, N.C. โ A 3 1/2-year ban on new local ordinances aimed at protecting LGBT rights in North Carolina expired Tuesday, prompting gay rights groups to urge the passage of such measures now. It drew national condemnation and prompted several large corporations and sports teams to relocate events to other states or reconsider expanding in North Carolina. As the moratorium ended, leaders of Equality North Carolina and the Campaign for Southern Equality on Tuesday urged North Carolina residents to contact leaders of cities and urge them to expand anti-discrimination laws for the LGBT community. The moratorium had barred new local ordinances related to private employment, hotels and restaurants. Beau Mills, executive director of the North Carolina Metro Mayors Coalition, said before the ban ended that he wasn't aware of any city planning to pass new ordinances right away.
'Dueling dinosaurs' fossils donated to North Carolina museum
RALEIGH, N.C. โ The fossil skeletons of two dinosaurs intertwined in what looks like a final death match have been donated to a North Carolina museum. The nonprofit organization Friends of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences said in a statement Tuesday that it acquired the fossilized animals with private funds. The Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops horridus known as the dueling dinosaurs were buried together 67 million years ago. The nonprofit said the distinct preservation will give museum paleontologists an unprecedented opportunity for research and education. In June, a U.S. appeals court ruled the fossils belong to the owners of the landโs surface rights, not the owners of the mineral rights.

(AP Photo/Gerry Broome, Pool, file)RALEIGH, N.C. โ North Carolina's intensely competitive and expensive U.S. Senate race has been upended by personal and health disruptions that sent sharp tremors and uncertainty through the campaigns and an electorate already casting ballots. McLennan and Gary Pearce, a longtime state Democratic consultant, said it's unclear how much of an effect the text messages will have on the election. Petri said Cunningham tested negative for COVID-19 on Saturday and will be tested again Monday. The Tillis campaign, citing its own health concerns, deferred on Saturday questions about the text messages to Cunningham. Tillis' campaign hasn't announced his third quarter fundraising totals.
NC halts plan to resolve ballot issue with voter affidavits
RALEIGH, N.C. โ Pending a legal review, the North Carolina State Board of Elections is suspending steps to allow voters to correct absentee ballots lacking the required witness signature by signing an affidavit. In a memo sent to county elections officials on Thursday, the state board's executive director, Karen Brinson Bell, ordered them to hit the brakes on the plan. Before the state began encouraging the use of affidavits, local elections officials had to send out an entirely new ballot for voters to complete with all the necessary information. A federal judge on Wednesday expressed concern that last week's memo from the state elections board to issue affidavits instead of a new ballot would essentially upend the witness requirement.
