LEXINGTON, Va. Faculty at Washington and Lee University have voted to remove Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lees name from the school, but that doesnt mean necessarily such a change will occur. The motion was approved on Monday during a special video conference meeting attended by faculty members, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The school was named for early benefactor George Washington and Lee, who was a president of the university and is buried in a campus chapel. After Lee died in 1870, the faculty requested that the trustees rename the college in Lees honor, according to the university. The trustees agreed, changing the name from Washington College to Washington and Lee University.

Im very angry, said Tina Tabor, who feels like history is being destroyed. She is a decedent of Robert Alexander, who served as president of Augusta Academy, which later became Washington & Lee University. The Lee in the universitys name refers to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Faculty members have not discussed what theyd like the universitys new name to be.

LEXINGTON, Va. More pressure could be coming for Washington & Lee University to change its name and removing all references to the confederacy. No action was taken, but more than 100 undergraduate and law school professors who attended the meeting plan to send a formal request to the schools president and board of trustees by the end of the month. The votes, however, were not the necessary 1,991 to win the nomination, requiring a second round of voting. “That was decided by a combination of my research and the political team’s research,” said, Washington & Lee student Garrett Allen, the convention’s Virginia state chairman. Noah’s comments drew frequent applause from Washington and Lee students. “Trevor Noah was able to bring the comedy aspect of his routine, but also some really deep issues with his upbringing in apartheid South Africa,” Washington & Lee junior Jack Fencl said.
