Hope Perdue is charged with second degree murder in his death.

It's been nearly six months since Carol Bates lost her son. She says the details in the search warrants are unbelievable.

"It's terrible," says Bates. "I try. I wonder if he felt anything what was he thinking? What did he do? I just don't even know how to wrap my head around how someone could do something to a three-year-old little boy."

She also says David Perdue is grieving over Callen's death. They see each other from time to time and according to deputies he was the one who called 911.

"He was the one who found him," says Bates. "He carried him to the ambulance. He said he took him and laid him in the living room until the ambulance got there, and he had to see all that. Her children saw it. It's really rough for a lot of people."

Bates says through it all she clings to Callen's favorite toy a stuffed giraffe. It was the only thing left of his after investigators cleared the Perdue's home for evidence.

"After they cleared the house, my mom and my little sister went in there and this was the only thing they hadn't took," says Bates.
