DANVILLE (WSLS10) - The water holds its share of dangers and with more people expected to jump in this weekend on account of it being Memorial Day Weekend, first responders are sharing the information you need to know in case of an emergency.

The Danville Life Saving Crew encourages you to stay away from the water altogether if you are going to be drinking.

But, if you do see someone in need of help, immediately call 911 and then try to reach the person with a paddle or tree branch.

If you can't reach them, throw a flotation device to them. This includes things like Styrofoam coolers, empty gallon jugs, and anything else that floats and that the person could hold on to.

Crew member Garry Ryan said getting in the water yourself should always be a last resort.

"If you are untrained, the last thing you want to do is to physically go into the water to try to help them. The last thing we want is two victims," Ryan emphasized.

Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest times for emergency rooms.

Alcohol related injuries and illnesses and car accidents are other top concerns.
