SALEM (WSLS10)-- Women in the Roanoke Valley are getting a lesson in self defense. Experts say abut 31 million crimes are reported in the U.S. each year, which is nearly one crime per second. Often women and children are the targets because they're seen as easy prey.

This weekend the Phoenix Self Defense Company in Salem will offer a survival camp just for women. The one day training camp will teach women what to look out for, how to fight off attackers and what to do in dangerous situations.

"I'll teach women how to get away from an attacker of any size," says Brian Cuthbert, with Phoenix Self Defense Company. "No matter how much bigger, faster or stronger they are. Any person that attacks you is going to be bigger, faster and stronger."

He says women will also learn how to strike back-- training in different types of attack scenarios on how to escape.
