PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) -  Pittsylvania County is one step closer to building a new animal shelter.

During Tuesday night's meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved awarding a contract to the lowest bidder,  Blair Construction in Gretna, which entered a bid of $3,149,000.

The supervisors also approved two additions to that bid, which brings the total to $3,243,000.

The board of supervisors decided to go forward with an agreement with the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, so that CFDRR will release funds collected by the community to the county to build the shelter.

Only Supervisor Tim Barber opposed awarding the bid. He wanted to postpone the decision until the end of this year to give potential donors a chance to come forward and donate to CFDRR fund and therefore reduce the amount the county has to pay.

There will now be a 10-day layover before supervisors officially appropriate the money for the shelter and there will be a public hearing before supervisors take the official vote to appropriate the money. Both of these steps are standard operating procedure.
