Cause of fire still under investigation

Four people are safe after their boat caught on fire Wednesday evening on Smith Mountain Lake.

The fire was reported on the Roanoke River channel just north of Hales Ford Bridge just before 5:45 p.m.

All four people on the boat were able to get off safely without injury, according to the Franklin County Department of Public Safety.

Crews with the Smith Mountain Lake Marie Fire Department, Scruggs Fire & Rescue and Franklin County Department of Public Safety responded.

The cause of the fire and amount in damage are both under investigation by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conversation Police and the Fire Marshalā€™s Office in Franklin County.
