IOWA CITY, Iowa ā€“ An Iowa infant died 10 days after being hospitalized after coming in contact with someone who had a cold sore, according to WHO-TV.

The NBC affiliateĀ reports that Mariana was born a healthy baby girl on July 1, and six days later, doctors told Nicole and her husband, Shane, that Mariana had contracted meningitis HSV1.Ā

DoctorsĀ say itā€™s likely someone with a cold sore touched Mariana, who then touched her mouth, spreading the virus.

ā€œOur princess Mariana ReeseĀ SifritĀ gained her angel wings at 8:41 am this morning in her daddyā€™s arms and her mommy right beside her,ā€ NicoleĀ SifritĀ posted on her Facebook page Tuesday morning.Ā ā€œIn her 18 days of life she made a huge impact on the world and we hope with Marianaā€™s Story we save numerous newborns life.ā€

ā€œI always thought this stuff happens and itā€™s a shame and never thought it would happen to me,ā€ Nicole told WHO-TV last week.Ā ā€œI was not prepared at all. Keep your babies isolated.Ā  Donā€™t let just anyone come visit them.Ā Ā  Make sure they are constantly washing their hands. Donā€™t let people kiss your baby and make sure they ask before they pick up your baby.ā€
