About half the layoffs were in the graduate and professional studies program, while the rest came from staff and administrative personnel in other departments, according to Cassie Williams Jones, a spokeswoman for the university.

She said the cuts represent about 3 percent of Averett's operating budget and that no further layoffs are anticipated.

Last month, Averett University welcomed the largest freshman class in its history.
