Rivalry Week: Hokies look to keep Commonwealth Cup for 14th straight year

Virginia and Virginia Tech will collide in Charlottesville Friday for the cup

BLACKSBURG, Va. – It's rivalry week and the Hokies and Cavaliers meeting this year is expected to be more competitive than years past. At 6-5 the 'Hoos have the best record they've had entering thing game since 2011.

"Virginia is a much better football team this year than they were a year ago. They've got some dynamic skill kids, particularly at receiver, and I know they have a veteran defense in some spots and just playing with a lot of confidence and doing extremely well right now. We're going to have to go and play a heck of a football game," said Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

"You know UVA is doing pretty good this year but even if they were 1-10, we would still be hyped up this week just because of who they are, the rivalry and all that but I feel like UVA is going to play their best game so we've got to be ready for that and we just have to come out and execute and just play Virginia Tech football," added defensive tackle Ricky Walker.

Virginia Tech has won the Commonwealth Cup for 13 consecutive seasons. The last time the cup was in Charlottesville was in 2003.

"You know, we're playing for more than just ourselves and the streak, we're playing for the past players that have come through and have started the streak, there's a lot on the line," said linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka.

Kickoff is at 8 p.m. Friday night at UVA. 10News will have live coverage from Charlottesville starting Friday at 5 p.m.
