Hamilton holds off Verstappen to win tense F1 season-opener
(AP Photo/Kamran Jebreili)SAKHIR โ World champion Lewis Hamilton just managed to hold off Max Verstappen to win the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and clinch the 96th Formula One win of his career on Sunday. The race was effectively decided when Verstappen overtook Hamilton on Lap 53 of 56 but went too wide on a turn and off track limits. He was told by his team to give Hamilton the position back, as he risked a time penalty. Verstappen still had a few laps to catch Hamilton and he almost did, finishing just .74 seconds behind the Mercedes driver. Verstappen took a superb pole position on Saturday, the fourth of his career, and started immediately ahead of Hamilton under floodlights at the desert track.

Families of Boeing crash victims renew push for FAA changes
FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson has personally vouched for the plane's safety. A military and airline pilot before heading FAA, Dickson flew a Max in September. Boeing says Max jets have made 9,000 flights for 14 airlines without incident since returning to service late last year. Joe Jacobsen told the family that FAA delegated the review of most aspects of the flight system to a small number of Boeing engineers. The company admitted that two former test pilots hid information about changes to MCAS from the FAA.
Boeing posts $8.4 billion loss on weaker demand for planes
Boeing said Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, it lost $8.4 billion in the fourth quarter on weaker demand for planes during the pandemic. However, the biggest piece of the fourth-quarter loss reported Wednesday was a pretax charge of $6.5 billion tied to its newest plane, the bigger 777X. It all added up to a record full-year loss of $11.94 billion. Boeing lost $14.65 per share, much worse than the $1.64 per share loss that Wall Street expected, according to a FactSet survey. Besides the 777X write-down, Boeing took several other charges including $744 million for the Max settlement with the Justice Department.

Waiting for passengers, American puts Boeing Max in the air
An American Airlines Boeing 737 Max jet plane is prepared for to fly from Dallas Fort Worth airport in Grapevine, Texas, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020. American Airlines took its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month. โI'm really disgusted by the whole thing and the fact that American Airlines would pay for that. It's not responsible for them to put you on this flight.โChicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.
European regulator moves to clear Boeing 737 for flight
BERLIN โ European regulators on Tuesday took a step closer to letting the Boeing 737 Max fly again, publishing a proposed airworthiness directive that could see the aircraft cleared within weeks after being grounded for nearly two years over deadly crashes. The publication of the directive by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency opens a 28-day public consultation period after which the agency will review the input and then approve the aircraft for flight. That happened less than five months after another Max flown by Indonesiaโs Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea. The move by the EASA, which is based in Cologne, Germany, comes after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration already cleared the Boeing 737 Max earlier this month. The European directive requires the same changes as those mandated by the FAA, so there will be no software or technical differences between jets operated by American or European carriers.

FAA poised to clear Boeing 737 Max to fly again
FILE - In this Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, file photo, a Boeing 737 Max jet, piloted by Federal Aviation Administration Chief Steve Dickson, prepares to land at Boeing Field following a test flight in Seattle. The FAA is poised to clear the Boeing 737 Max to fly again after grounding the jets for nearly two years due to a pair of disastrous crashes that killed 346 people. Boeing sales of new planes have plunged because of the Max crisis and the coronavirus pandemic. Hansman said pilot training for qualified 737 pilots shouldnโt take long because Boeing has fixed problems with the Maxโs software. Relatives say it's too soon, and they and their lawyers say Boeing and the FAA are withholding documents.
Deeper job cuts at Boeing as pandemic throttles air travel
Boeing said Wednesday that it will cut 7,000 more jobs as it continues to bleed money during a pandemic that has smothered demand for new airline planes. Boeing Co. outlined the job cuts on the same day it reported a $449 million loss for the third quarter, a swing from the $1.17 billion it earned in the same period last year. Thursday marks the second anniversary of the crash of a Lion Air 737 Max off the coast of Indonesia. With customers in no mood to buy expensive new planes, Boeing expects to keep burning cash. The Max was Boeingโs best-selling plane, but now the company has 450 in storage that it canโt deliver.
FAA chief tests changes to Boeing's grounded 737 Max
A Boeing 737 MAX jet, piloted by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Steve Dickson, takes off on a test flight from Boeing Field, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, in Seattle. The MAX was grounded worldwide in early March 2019 after the second of two fatal accidents that together killed 346 people aboard almost-new aircraft. Dickson said he landed the plane twice and also did โsome air work maneuvers.โThe Max has been grounded since March 2019, after the second crash. Zipporah Kuria, a British citizen whose father died in the second Max crash, called Dickson's flight โa gimmickโ to reassure the public. Dickson said the FAA is working closely with other global regulators and being transparent in its review of the plane.
Panel's report blasts Boeing, FAA for crashes, seeks reforms
But both the agency and Boeing have said certification of the Max complied with FAA regulations, the 246-page report said. He said the committee won't scrap the delegation program, and he hopes to reach agreement on reforms before year's end. Committee investigators said they found several instances in which Boeing concealed information about MCAS from the FAA and airlines. But there was no evidence that they reported this to the FAA, the report said. According to the report, Boeing wanted to keep details about MCAS from the FAA so it wouldn't require additional pilot training.
Regulators to examine pilot training for Boeing 737 Max jets
Aviation regulators and pilots from several countries will begin next week reviewing Boeingโs proposal for training pilots to fly the revamped 737 Max, a sign that the grounded plane is moving closer to returning to service. The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that the review will start Monday at Londonโs Gatwick Airport and last about nine days. The review will include aviation officials and pilots from the United States, Canada, Brazil and the European Union. A spokesman for Chicago-based Boeing said the company expects to win regulatory approval to resume shipping new Max jets in the fourth quarter. Earlier Friday, Europeโs flight safety authority said the first flight tests for the Max were completed.

Gomez learned to use a wet towel to adjust the shape and position on the plate of a classic French omelette.
Troubles abound, Boeing losses bloom to $2.4 billion in 2Q
Boeing lost $2.4 billion in the second quarter and the company will slow production and cut more jobs as demand for commercial aircraft shrinks during the coronavirus pandemic. Calhoun said the defense unit is hiring, and Boeing still expects a net workforce reduction of around 10%, or 16,000 people, by year-end. The $2.40 billion loss included more than $1.3 billion in write-downs for production slowdowns, severance payments and temporary closures because of virus outbreaks in Boeing factories. Revenue fell to $11.81 billion, down from $15.75 billion a year earlier. Boeing shares fell nearly 4% in midday trading.

AT&T Inc. on Thursday said the coronavirus sapped $2.8 billion from its revenue, mostly in its WarnerMedia TV and film division. WarnerMedia revenue fell 23% to $6.8 billion due to a pullback by TV advertisers, particularly as there were no live sports, and movie theaters closed. The company is hoping to navigate the shift to online video with its HBO Max service, which launched in late May. There are 36.3 million U.S. subscribers to HBO Max or HBO. The company said it had work to do to educate and motivate HBO customers that they could switch to HBO Max, which has more content.

HBO Max costs $15, same as the HBO Now streaming service it's supposed to replace, with discounts after the launch limited to some AT&T customers. Disney launched Disney Plus and the sports-focused ESPN Plus and took control of Hulu from an industry joint venture. It's easy to prompt HBO Now users to switch to Max if they signed up directly through HBO, and many big cable companies have agreed to promote HBO Max to their existing HBO customers.

American expects 737 Max flights to return mid-January
(CNN) - American Airlines announced Wednesday that it is removing the Boeing 737 Max from its flight schedule until mid-January, an acknowledgment that the aviation industry does not expect the plane to carry passengers during the busy holiday travel season. "American expects to slowly phase in the MAX for commercial service and will increase flying on the aircraft throughout the month and into February," the airline said. "The FAA is following a thorough process, not a prescribed timeline, for returning the Boeing 737 Max to passenger service," the spokesman said. It is a setback for airlines that they will not have the 737 Max back in service in time for the busy holiday travel season. As they wait to increase capacity, they could use the 737 Max on some flights that are currently scheduled to have other equipment, such as the older, less fuel efficient 737-800.

Boeing's 737 Max was grounded in March following two deadly crashes. Ryanair has ordered the 737 Max 200, a variant of the plane that will need to be separately certified by regulators. It said the base closures "are directly caused" by 737 Max delays.
Saudi airline goes all in on Airbus as Boeing struggles

Flyadeal said the deal was struck between its parent company, Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation, and Airbus during the Paris Air Show in June. "This order will result in flyadeal operating an all- Airbus A320 fleet in the future," the statement continued. In December, Boeing and flyadeal announced that the Saudi airliner had committed to buying between 30 to 50 737 Max jets in a deal that could be worth up to $5.9 billion at list price. Earlier this year, Indonesian airline Garuda canceled a multibillion-dollar order for 737 Max 8 jets.
