Slick spots continue before mountain snow, strong gusts arrive
Before you head out, plan on scraping any snow or ice off your car windshield. Scraping snow and ice off Monday morningAs we head into the afternoon, expect the sky to remain cloudy. High temperature forecast for Monday, 2/1/2021Wrap-around moisture from yesterdayโs storm system will be enough to generate some snow showers during the evening. However, itโs possible that we see an inch or less in parts of the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley and Highlands. What we're tracking - Friday 2/5/2021With that front stalling to the east, weโll have to see if another storm system can ride along it this weekend.
Mostly mountain snow Tuesday; better potential by Friday
TuesdayWeโre tracking a weak system Tuesday that will bring snow mostly to our west-facing slopes, especially during the afternoon and evening. Rather, it goes from west to east and that could create a sharp cutoff between inches of snow and nothing. Two scenarios for Friday's snow potential - 1/8/2021By taking 50 variations of the European forecast model, we can show the odds of different amounts of snow Friday. Odds of 1" of snow on Friday, 1/8/2021, as of Tuesday morningThe odds of 3โณ of snow are still highest close to the North Carolina-Virginia border. Odds of 3" of snow on Friday, 1/8/2021, as of Tuesday morningAs for the odds of 6โณ of snow or more, those go down dramatically.
Warmer weather gradually nudges its way into the area this week
Thatโs the case in parts of the Highlands and Southern Shenandoah, where we are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 a.m.One area that needs to be watched closely is Afton Mountain. An area of low pressure developing near Asheville, North Carolina will swing up this way. Meanwhile, we look forward to some warmer, brighter days mid-to-late week. Some of us will get warm Friday, before another front moves in - bringing us the chance for more rain Friday afternoon. That chance may linger into parts of the weekend, depending on the location of this front.
