Virginia State Police have installed speed safety cameras in work zones along I-81. The cameras are now in Botetourt and Roanoke counties between mile markers 143 and 150.
Phillip Shuford, a homeowner off Radford Road, has lived off Radford Road, or Route 11, for a year. Every day it is a challenge just getting in and out of his driveway.
The city’s Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate all injuries and fatalities on the roads. The plan has three components: a Safety Action Plan to reach zero deaths, a Speed Management Action Plan to address speeding, and a Transportation Bike Network to connect bike lanes.
Police said they are working to correct some issues with the new speeding cameras outside of the Altavista Combined School and Altavista Elementary School.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Roanoke County police are urging people to slow down. “We do see an increased number in speed complaints in neighborhoods, just more people being at home," said Sgt. Northam’s stay-at-home order went into effect in March but the number of fatal and non-fatal speed-related crashes increased compared to 2019. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, there has been a “severe spike” in speeding nationwide as a result of so many people staying at home. The DMV campaign is also an opportunity to remind people about something that can be just as important as their speed.
