The dedication of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources marker is scheduled for March 18 at High Street Baptist Church.

The church traces its founding to 1865 by freed slaves. Church members erected their first sanctuary in 1873. Fire destroyed the church five years later and the current church was constructed in 1901.

The church became a hub for non-violent civil rights activism and protests in the 1960s. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at High Street Baptist.

The city of Danville is sponsoring the marker.
