Roanoke City Schools serves more than 100 free meals on day off

Schools offered free lunch on Tuesday

ROANOKE, Va. ā€“ Students in Roanoke City Schools had the day off again Tuesday because of weather, which may be troubling for kids who depend on the meal they get at school.

That's why the school system opened up five schools to offer free lunch to students and parents in need.

School leaders said it's very important, as a majority of their students live in poverty.

"Our students have been out since last Thursday. We typically see students pretty hungry over a weekend, add that we've now been out Monday and Tuesday, we know our kids are hungry. They need to be fed," community relations coordinator Justin McLeod said.

They served 105 free meals Tuesday.
