Roanoke’s Drumstick Dash set for its in-person return

Thousands will take part in the Thanksgiving tradition

ROANOKE, Va. – We are just 10 days away from people running in downtown Roanoke as part of the annual Drumstick Dash.

So far, about 3,500 people have signed up for the November 25 5K race.

One hundred fifty volunteers are prepping for the run but more help is needed to help control the crowd and pass out packets.

Every dollar raised will go to the Rescue Mission to serve hundreds of thousands of meals to people in need.

After going virtual last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rescue Mission Community Outreach Manager Kevin Barry said people are more eager than ever to join the race.

“The number of family traditions, the sibling rivalries,” Barry said. “All these things that people are counting on when Drumstick Dash would happen on Thanksgiving day. Well, they were just ready for that to happen again. We’ve been waiting for two years to have it downtown and we can’t wait for Thanksgiving Day.”

Pets are welcome to join the race and can receive a Mill Mountain Star-themed charm for their collar.

The cost is $35 to run or $25 to walk the course.

The run begins at 8 a.m., while the walk starts at 9 a.m.
