PRESIDENT TRUMP

Detroit voters sue President Trump over his attempt to block certification of election results

DETROIT – Three Detroit voters have joined a local organization in suing President Trump and his campaign over their effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, along with three Detroit residents, filed a lawsuit against the Trump campaign Friday, arguing that the campaign is seeking to disenfranchise Black voters in their attempt to block the certification of Michigan votes -- especially those from Wayne County. “Having lost the vote in Michigan and other states that are necessary for a majority of the electoral college, President Trump and the Donald J. Trump For President, Inc. Campaign are engaged in a campaign to overturn the results of the election by blocking certification of the results, on the (legally incorrect) theory that blocking certification would allow state legislatures to override the will of the voters and choose the Trump Campaign’s slate of electors,” the complaint reads. They claim that Trump’s campaign has been “intimidating or coercing state and local officials from aiding Plaintiffs and other residents of Detroit and Wayne County from having their votes ‘counted properly and included in the appropriate totals of votes cast’” -- which, if true, is in direct violation of the act. UVA medical expert says experimental drug given to Trump works in COVID-19 treatment

ROANOKE, Va. – Nearly one week after President Trump received the experimental drug, one medical expert in our area said they’re using that same cocktail as part of a national study — and they’re seeing results. Doctor William Petri of the University of Virginia told 10 News Thursday the cocktail appears to be effective, lowering the number of days a patient is sick from about 13 to eight. “The drug or medication is two antibodies against the virus that causes COVID-19, and we know from phase three physical trials that this drug works to treat COVID-19,” said Dr. William Perti. “So, patients that have received these antibodies, including President Trump last week, have lower viral loads, less virus, and they have shorter duration of symptoms.”Doctor Perti added that the university plans on administering the drug to 40 patients as part of the national study. To be eligible, you have to be living with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last four days and continue living with that same person for a month.

President Trump traveling to survey damage in hurricane-hit states

(AP) – Fresh off the Republican National Convention, President Donald Trump flew to Louisiana on Saturday to survey the damage after Hurricane Laura, a trip that allows him to use the trappings of his office to try to project empathy and leadership. White House spokesman Judd Deere said Trump wanted “to be with those who have been impacted by Hurricane Laura.” He is expected to survey storm damage and receive briefings on emergency operations and ongoing relief efforts. After giving his acceptance speech Thursday night as planned, Trump held a raucous rally Friday evening in New Hampshire. John Bel Edwards has said Laura was the most powerful hurricane ever to strike his state, surpassing even Hurricane Katrina, which was a Category 3 when it hit in 2005. Weaker remnants of the hurricane continued to move across the southern U.S., unleashing heavy rain and isolated tornadoes.

Many White House attendees are not social distancing or wearing masks ahead of Trump’s July 4th remarks

The Washington, DC, celebration does not appear to be following US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines concerning gatherings despite deputy White House press secretary Judd Deere telling CNN this week that the White House would enforce social distancing. CNN has asked the White House whether guests are being tested or having temperatures checked but has yet to receive a response. The White House stopped temperature checks of all those entering the White House grounds weeks ago. "Good question, but let me just see," Giroir, the assistant secretary for health for the US Department of Health and Human Services, said when asked if the White House event was setting a good example for other Americans. Trump's remarks, an aide told CNN, will seek to contrast those of former Vice President Joe Biden, which the aide called "truly shocking."

The Latest: No Republicans voted to impeach Trump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – 8:55 p.m.No Republicans voted to impeach President Donald Trump. Conservative Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, who left the GOP to become an independent, voted to impeach Trump on both charges. Those were the words spoken by President Donald Trump as he opened a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, on Wednesday night. The New York Democrat explained that it's Vice President Mike Pence who'd become president if the House voted to impeach Trump and the Senate voted to remove him from office. The House has approved rules that allow six hours of floor debate on historic votes to impeach President Donald Trump.

House Judiciary Committee sets Dec. 4 impeachment hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Judiciary Committee is set to take over the impeachment probe of President Donald Trump next week, scheduling a Dec. 4 hearing on the question of “high crimes and misdemeanors” set out in the Constitution. The hearing, announced Tuesday, will feature legal experts who will examine the constitutional grounds for impeachment. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said that it will “explore the framework put in place to respond to serious allegations of impeachable misconduct.”The Judiciary hearing will come as the House intelligence committee is expected to submit a report compiling evidence of its probe into Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. Trump and his lawyers are invited to attend the hearing and make a request to question witnesses, according to Democratic rules approved by the House last month. The Judiciary panel gave the White House until Dec. 1 to decide whether Trump or his lawyers would attend.

President Trump to make animal cruelty a federal felony

ROANOKE, Va. – President Donald Trump is expected to sign the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act into law on Monday. PACT is a bipartisan bill that criminalizes acts of animal cruelty, including crushing, burning, drowning and impaling animals, among other things. The president is expected to sign the bill at 4:30 p.m., according to his schedule. These crimes will now be considered federal felonies, allowing authorities to prosecute animal abusers who cross state lines. The bill also bans animal cruelty recorded on video.

Schiff says more hearings and witnesses possible in the impeachment inquiry

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Sunday he won’t foreclose the possibility of his committee undertaking more depositions and hearings in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump. Schiff said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that his committee continues to conduct investigative work, but he won’t let the Trump administration stall the inquiry. He said the hearings showed House Republicans are serious legislators and were “nothing but a total disaster” for Democrats. Schiff said he wants to talk with constituents and colleagues before making a final judgment on impeachment. Schiff said that if no Republicans ended up voting to support impeachment, he believes it would mean a failure of the GOP to put the country over their party.

Democrats invite President Trump to testify in impeachment inquiry

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invited President Donald Trump to testify in front of investigators in the House impeachment inquiry ahead of a week that will see several key witnesses appear publicly. And he should allow all those around him to come to the committee and testify under oath,” Schumer told reporters. Multiple witnesses overheard a phone call in which Trump and Sondland reportedly discussed efforts to push for the investigations. In her CBS interview, Pelosi vowed to protect the whistleblower, whom Trump has said should be forced to come forward despite longstanding whistleblower protections. Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, said Trump “communicates in ways that sometimes I wouldn’t,” but dismissed the significance of the attacks.
