Fundraising deadline nears for Botetourt County YMCA

The goal is to raise $9 million by Aug. 1

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – Local YMCA leaders are hoping to raise enough money to start construction on the new Botetourt County facility within the next couple of weeks.

The goal is $9 million by Aug. 1; so far, $8.65 million has been donated or pledged.

If the Y reaches $8.85 million by the deadline, a local donor says he'll provide the rest of the money to meet the goal.

"We've got a lot of folks out there who we believe are ready to commit to this and want to see a shovel go in the ground in the next couple months, and so we believe we can get there," President and CEO of YMCA of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mark Johnson said.

The plan is to break ground in late September. It will be a 43,000-square-foot fitness and community center at Daleville Town Center.

They hope to open it by January 2019.
