Authorities identify two drivers killed in I-81S crash in Roanoke County
Authorities have identified the two drivers killed in a crash on I-81 South in Roanoke County last week. According to state police, a 2015 tractor-trailer was going south on I-81 when it hit the back of a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. The 2015 tractor-trailer then hit a 2004 Chevy Impala, which then rear-ended a 2017 tractor-trailer, authorities said. State Police said the 2017 tractor-trailer then pulled off onto the right shoulder as the 2015 tractor-trailer hit the Hyundai a second time, before the Hyundai collided with the 2017 tractor-trailer. Authorities said charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation, but they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Ex-Philadelphia cop charged in fatal shooting of Black man
A white former Philadelphia police officer was charged Friday with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Black man after a high-speed car chase nearly three years ago. Four other officers who were on the scene and had taken cover did not fire their weapons, according to a grand jury presentment. The grand jury said Ruch shot Plowden in the head without justification as Plowden looked โdazed and lost on the sidewalk." According to the grand jury, Ruch and his partner began following Plowden and asked police dispatch to check the registration of his car. Ruch fired the fatal shot just 6 to 8 seconds after getting to the crash scene, the grand jury said.

Top Virginia official, 18-year-old girl killed in 3-car Augusta County crash
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. - Dr. Hughes Melton died Friday after being hospitalized after a crash Wednesday in Augusta County. Melton, the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services was driving when police believe he suffered a medical emergency, causing a three-car crash in which an 18-year-old girl died. Dr. Melton passed away today from injuries he sustained in a car accident on Wednesday. In 2018, I appointed Dr. Melton to serve Virginia as our DBHDS commissioner, a role he filled ably and with enthusiasm. Not only was Dr. Melton a devoted public servant and physician, I considered him a friend.
Hyundai, Kia recall 500K compact cars
Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than a half-million compact cars in the U.S. due to brake lights staying on after the pedal is released, The Associated Press reported. The faulty pad can keep the brake lights illuminated and allow shifting out of park without a foot on the brake, the AP reported. The vehicles subject to the recall include 390,000 2013-14 Hyundai Elantra cars and 134,000 2012-14 Kia Forte cars, the AP reported. Kia's recall starts Jan. 30, the AP reported. Dealers will replace the brake stopper pad, the AP reported.
US auto sales down 0.5% in May
U.S. auto sales dipped for the fifth month in a row in May, with a 0.5 percent decrease and more than 1.5 million vehicles sold, The Associated Press reported. General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai and Toyota reported decreases in sales last month compared to May 2016. IHS Markit analyst Tom Libby told the AP that despite good economic factors, like low unemployment and gas prices, there could be a decrease in auto sales for all of 2017. The past two years saw record sales of about 17.5 million vehicles, which analysts say could account for the lack of demand, the AP reported. Libby's firm reduced its 2017 sales forecast from 17.4 million to 17.3 million, the AP reported.
