Officials said the decision was made in consultation with the Marion County Public Health Department. In turn, Oregon will advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament, while VCUโs student-athletes and coaching staff will not be able to play anymore. According to the NCAA, it cannot disclose further details due to privacy issues.
VCU fraternity served cease-and-desist order after death of student
RICHMOND, Va. โ The Richmond Police Department and VCU Police are working together to investigate the death of a VCU student that was found in an off-campus residence early Saturday. The university identified the student as Adam Oakes in a statement posted to Twitter Sunday afternoon. According to university officials, the Delta Chi fraternityโs national office issued a cease-and-desist order to the VCU chapter on Saturday, to which VCU took similar action on Sunday as a continuation of the investigation. In the statement, Delta Chi also encouraged all fraternity members to cooperate with law enforcement in the investigation. We were devastated to learn of the death of a student at Virginia Commonwealth University and extend our condolences to the family, friends, and everyone touched by this heart-breaking news.
VCU considers requiring students to take courses on racism
RICHMOND, Va. โ Virginia Commonwealth University is considering whether to make courses on racism a requirement for its students. Constance Relihan, dean of VCUโs University College, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that many other colleges are having the same discussion as protests over racial injustice sweep across the U.S.VCU already offers a major in African American studies and has classes in other departments that address the history and implications of racism. But they arenโt part of the universityโs required curriculum.
VCU to remove Confederate names, symbols
RICHMOND, Va. โ A university in the former capital of the Confederacy will remove building names, plaques and other symbols that honor several of its past supporters. The board of visitors at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond voted unanimously on Friday to remove 16 different references on campus. School President Michael Rao formed a committee in 2017 to accumulate building names, busts, portraits and plaques that honor Confederate supporters, research their histories and begin discussions. โThe VCU memorial landscape is dominated by ex-Confederates or those people who sought to perpetuate and revere the memory of the Confederacy, currently represented in the form of dedicated spaces, memorial names, plaques and statues,โ VCU history professor Kathryn Shively said. Ginter refers to cigarette magnate Lewis Ginter, who at his death in 1897 left money for charities and public institutions.
