Last year, the Highlanders went 11-2, their final loss in the Region 2 final to Appomattox. Glenvar is turning the page, boasting with the highest numbers they’ve ever had in fall camp. This year, they’re lead by a young quarterback named Eli Taylor, who showed he can play against anyone last fall.
Glenvar Highlanders begin official start to football season on Thursday
SALEM, Va. – Whistles blowing and sleds being pushed is typically the sound of summer preparing the boys for fall. But after a quiet 2020, the Glenvar Highlanders took to the field Thursday for the first time in over a year. There’s certainly a lot of differences between starting the football season in August and February. There’s still snow in the bleachers, but there’s no circumstance too outrageous for the Highlanders to abide by in order to play. “As long as we get to play football everyone will be happy,” defensive end Blake Custer said.
Highlanders break in new, safer turf football field
The old, natural grass field was a muddy mess every time it rained, forcing the team to relocate, delay or cancel games. That's why the Roanoke County School District installed a new turf field earlier in August. "First game on the new field, you don't want to start that off with a loss, that's never, that's never good. It'll be used for high school soccer, middle school athletics, and the district may rent out the field to recreational organizations. "It's meaningful and I think having a surface like this in this stadium and our community, is really important to me, it's really important to my family, and it's really important to our community."
Consistency and blue-collar work ethic remains key for Glenvar
SALEM, Va - When it comes to Glenvar football you're guaranteed of two things -- a blue-collar work mentality and consistency. "People are just buying in to our mentality here and our work ethic and having that mindset throughout," said Glenvar head coach Kevin Clifford. The Highlanders have had double-digit wins in four of the past five seasons, including a state championship in 2014. "We're just going to come out, have a good season, hopefully win a few ball games but, if nothing else we know we're going to work. We're going to be competitive and when people play us, they're going to feel it," said Street.
