Radford City Public Schools is looking to make summer a whole lot cooler with its “Books for Bobcats” summer initiative.

RADFORD, Va. – COVID-19 outbreaks among athletic programs have forced two Radford City Public Schools to go virtual. Radford High School and John Dalton Intermediate will be completely virtual starting Thursday, March 25 through Friday, April 2. Superintendent Rob Graham said at least 10 students have come down with COVID-19. That’s why the district made the call to move to virtual learning temporarily. The schools will be closed until after spring break so the district can do a deep cleaning.

RADFORD, Va. – Radford City Public Schools Superintendent Rob Graham is making a decision he feels, “is in the best interest of the entire school community.”On Jan. 20, 2021, no school district buildings will be open. This decision comes after school leadership has heard from many governmental officials Inauguration Day may be met with violent protests in many states. For those who have a child or children who were eligible for services and/or face-to-face learning on Wednesday, those learning opportunities will be rescheduled. Also, food distribution will happen on Wednesday as the school nutrition staff, bus drivers and custodians will be available during that time to assist with that. RADFORD, Va. – UPDATEAll PK-12 students in Radford City Public Schools will participate in remote learning starting on Tuesday. Students will have asynchronous learning opportunities on Tuesday, according to school leaders. School leaders said they’re working closely with the New River Valley Health Department. Starting Tuesday, the school will switch to an all-virtual learning platform that will go until Dec. 7. McHarg, Belle Heth Elementary and Radford High School will all remain in a hybrid schedule.

RADFORD, Va. School leaders announced Thursday that a student or staff member in Radford City Schools has tested positive for COVID-19. This person was at school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and had indirect exposure with other members of the school community, according to school leaders. School leaders said they are working closely with the New River Valley Health Department, which is conducting contact tracing. The health department feels there there is limited exposure with others in the building, according to school leaders. School leaders asked all employees to work from home on Friday so that crews can deep clean all district schools.

Rather than two weeks of 100% virtual learning, in-person learning will continue on Aug. 31. “My worry is that they won’t go back, that this is going to kind of be the permenant way of the rest of the school year,” Radford City Parent Charlotte Parks said. Parks hopes people in the city use the schools closing as an example of being more careful. While the rest of this week will be fully virtual, starting Aug. 31, the school division’s hybrid schedule will resume. Radford City Public Schools came up with a video to help. Other McHarg and Belle Heth staff are in the video too. One of those dealt with face coverings as there has been so many differing opinions regarding face coverings as we developed our reopening plans, said Rob Graham, Radfords Superintendent. He says after several days of being in school, the video truly had a positive impact. As I walk around the schools and visit with students and teachers, I have been so impressed and proud of the responsibility and respect that all staff and students are demonstrating by wearing face coverings, said Graham.

RADFORD, Va. The following came from Radford schools:Radford City Public Schools is the recipient of a three-year grant from The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth to support Project GROW. Our school community is completely invested in making a positive difference in the lives of our students. The grant provides $90,000 to implement a Healthy Community Action Team (HCAT) which includes the Radford City Public Schools, faculty from the departments of Psychology and Counselor Education at Radford University, the Bobcat Backpack program, Beans and Rice program, parent representatives, and the City of Radford. Sarah Hastings and Nadine Hartig, both joined the Radford city community in 2006. Belle Heth Elementary School Principal Tara Grant stated, We are excited to have support through this grant which will help support healthy learning and living opportunities for our students. "
