Ralph Northam that all state public school systems must offer some form of in-person learning by mid-March. While most systems in Southwest Virginia have long offered in-person instruction, 40 systems across the state were not. On Thursday, Northam visited Salem City Schools to see how they’ve achieved in-person instruction so far. SALEM, Va. Busing students to and from school is going to be an issue this year because of physical distancing requirements. Typically about 30%t of Salem students take a bus. Only about 22 students are going to be able to ride each bus and its going to cost Salem more this year. We believe we all share the burden of making sure schools are safe for kids and for our teachers and really safer community. Hicks said Salem bus drivers are guaranteed 5 hours of work each school day and get benefits.

ROANOKE, Va. The Alleghany Health District holds a COVID-19 testing event today. Salem City Schools could approve reopening plans for the fall at tonights school board meting. The Radford School Board will receive a presentation on reopening plans for the fall. The superintendent of Pulaski County Schools will lay out the plans for reopening schools this fall. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the Little Theater at Pulaski County High School and will be streamed online.

SALEM, Va. The start to the school year in Salem will be far from normal. While the first day for students will be Aug. 31, far from all the citys students will be in the classroom that day. The school division announced four different options for the upcoming school year, that can be scaled up when limits on the number of students allowed are eased, and eventually removed. The school division will release more specific information about start times, bus schedules and parent drop-off times as they are finalized. Please continue to be patient, flexible, and attentive to future correspondence from the school division and your school, said Superintendent Alan Seibert.
