Florida Panthers off to 2nd-best start in franchise history
Floridaโs 6-1-2 start through nine games is the second-best in franchise history, topped only by the 6-0-3 record to open the 1996-97 season. โWe've been consistent in most games," Florida coach Joel Quenneville said. Starting poorly, however, has pretty much snuffed out some Panthers seasons before they even started. The five Florida teams that went to the playoffs โ 1995-96, 1996-97, 1999-2000, 2011-12 and 2015-16 โ averaged 12 standings points through the seasonโs first nine games. Thereโs obviously a long way to go, but the Panthers finally have the start they wanted.
FBI: 2 agents killed, 3 wounded, suspect dead in Florida
Two of the wounded agents were taken to hospitals to be treated and were in stable condition, said Miami FBI Agent Michael D. Leverock. Based on a preliminary investigation, federal officials believe the suspect fatally shot himself, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter. AdThe FBI agents had come to the apartment complex to serve a federal search warrant in connection with a case involving child pornography and violent crimes against children, according to Leverock and FBI Agents Association President Brian OโHare. Law enforcement officials from numerous agencies lined up to pay their respects as a flag-covered body was removed from the vehicle and taken inside. Five other FBI agents were wounded in that shooting, which led the bureau to upgrade the weapons that agents carry.
PHOTOS: Wednesday morning starts with a dazzling sunrise across the area
ROANOKE, Va. โ The great thing about winter approaching is that colder air is no longer just at airplane level. That means ice crystals can form in clouds at many levels. When the sunโs light bends off those ice crystals, we oftentimes get beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Many of you saw that firsthand Wednesday morning, and we put a gallery together of your photos below:Full Screen 1 / 52 Michael Kline - Daleville

Dust from Sahara Desert likely to create beautiful sunrises, sunsets next week
ROANOKE, Va. โ Make sure to send your sunrise and sunset pictures any time to Pin It! With that plume over the Gulf and Caribbean, that decreases our likelihood of a developing tropical system next week. The dust is just another group of particles that can add color to a sunrise or sunset. Forecast data indicates a plume of dust from the Sahara traveling toward the Caribbean and southern/southeastern U.S. next week. This could at least limit tropical development, but it could also make for very nice sunrises and sunsets.

Six more weeks of winter? Punxsutawney Phil makes his Groundhog Day prediction
And this year Punxsutawney Phil declared: "Spring will be early, it's a certainty." Legend has it that if the creature casts a shadow on Feb. 2, winter will continue for six more weeks. From 2015 through 2019, he has predicted six more weeks of winter thrice and an early spring twice. Elsewhere, in New York City, Staten Island Chuck also predicted an early spring. The critter who resides at Staten Island Zoo groundhog also did not see his shadow.
Northernmost point of the U.S. sees first official sunrise in over two months
As we get closer to the first day of winter each year, the sunโs direct rays inch closer to the Tropic of Capricorn (in the southern hemisphere). This means that the Arctic Circle has been tilted away from the sun over the past two months. Now that the sunโs rays are getting closer to the Equator, the Arctic Circle isnโt tilted as far from the sun. This allows them to see their first official sunrise since November 18, 2019. Daylight hours - 1/23/2020 to 4/1/2020In the coming weeks and months, this will increase (as it does every year).
Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour Saturday night!
That means most will get an extra hour of sleep. Sunrise will be about one hour earlier, which means it will be lighter in the morning. Only people living in Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories will not be making the change because they don't observe daylight saving time. This is also the time when fire officials remind homeowners to put new batteries in smoke alarms. Copyright 2019 by WSLS 10 - All rights reserved.
