Women raise $11K for Roanoke Hospitality House by shaving heads for friend with cancer
ROANOKE, Va. – You have heard the saying “fight like a girl,” but one group of women wants to do more than that. Not allowing the disease to set the tone of their friendship, they decided to raise money to shave their heads. Ad“We really wanted to hit $10,000, that was our stretch goal and we hit stretch in 36 hours and we were like, ‘wow,’” said Cooper. They collectively raised $11,000, which is going to help build Roanoke Hospitality House, a home away from home for family members of hospital patients. “They actually in 36 hours made a donation to us that was greater than any one single donation we have ever received,” said Terrianne Julian, acting director of Roanoke Hospitality House.
One person arrested after stabbing in Grandin apartment
ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke Police are investigating an incident that left one injured and another arrested in Grandin Saturday afternoon. An officer on the scene told 10 News that a person was stabbed inside of the Grandin Village Apartments on 1700 Grandin Road around 2:40 p.m.Police said one person is arrested. What investigators know as the search for Michael Brown continues
ROANOKE, Va. – The manhunt for alleged murder suspect and marine Michael Brown continues Friday morning. US Marshals tell 10 News there are still no confirmed sightings of Brown. Investigators say the RV in the church parking lot in Grandin is the last concrete piece of evidence they have to go on. The Marshals say they believe Brown is still in southwest Virginia and are waiting for the right tip. There are more than a dozen search warrants in franklin county court for this case but they are all sealed.
NAMI Roanoke Valley hosts candlelight vigil for mental health awareness
ROANOKE, Va. - This week is national mental illness awareness week and some local folks took time to remember those suffering both in silence and out loud. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Roanoke Valley hosted a candlelight vigil inside due to rain in Roanoke's Grandin neighborhood on Tuesday night. They want to honor those who struggle with mental illness, both living and deceased, and those who try to help. "It is the opportunity to educate, to make the conversation normal," NAMI Roanoke Valley President Mary Parker Wilson said. Roanoke County leaders issued a proclamation for mental illness awareness week.
Light for Liberty rally
ROANOKE, Va. - Saturday evening people in Roanoke joined the thousands across the nation rallying to end border detention camps. Leaders from multiple different religious backgrounds gathered in the Grandin area at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. The rally had speakers and a candlelight vigil.
