Outdoor event in Roanoke features free helmets, lessons on bike safety
ROANOKE, Va. โ Dozens of children enjoyed Roanokeโs weather Saturday with an outdoor event at Lucy Addison Middle School. Total Action for Progressโ โBring Your Wheelsโ event focused on bike safety; many of the children adhered to the title and rode their bikes to the gathering. Every child within TAPโs Youth Education Program received a free bike helmet and a lesson from Brain Injury Services of Southwest Virginia. Program director Angela Williams said sheโs just happy the children got outside. โWhen I was young, we played kickball, had sack races, and rode our bikes,โ Williams said.

Lucy Addison Middle School needs us. Hale delivered an impassioned speech to dozens of people at Lucy Addison Middle School Monday evening in response to a fifth principal in 18 months leaving last week. The acting principal is Jonathan Rosser, a product of Roanoke City Schools and a 1995 graduate of William Flemming High School. Many teachers at Addison have had questions about administration, telling 10 News off camera that students are not always on their best behaviors. They pledged to step up and do something, whatever it may be, to save Lucy Addison and its students.
Roanoke middle school principal leaves less than a month into the job
ROANOKE, Va. โ Another principal is out at Lucy Addison Middle School. On Friday, Anna Unversaw abruptly quit, citing family issues, according to teachers at the school. On Jan. 6, Roanoke City Public Schools announced the hiring of Unversaw as the schoolโs new principal. She was the fifth principal in less than two years at the school. Assistant Principal Jonathon Rosser will now serve as the acting principal.
Roanoke City Schools wraps up inaugural father and male role model engagement week
ROANOKE, Va. - On Friday night, Roanoke City Schools wrapped up its inaugural father and male role model engagement week. The program is titled Kicking it with our Kings and was designed to engage men by inviting them into schools. City schools leaders hosted three dinners this week. Earlier this week, Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea spoke at another dinner. "K ids now, they need somebody, they need help," Roanoke City Schools grandparent Harold Hancock Jr. said.
Roanoke City Schools reconstructs school entrances for extra security
Roanoke City Public Schools has finished renovating several schools in the district with more secure entrances. The schools affected are Monterey Elementary School, Lincoln Terrace Elementary School, Morningside Elementary School, Fishburn Park Elementary School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School and Lucy Addison Middle School. "The traumatic effect of school shootings has brought about greater thinking when it comes to safety and security," said Roanoke City Schools Chief of Security Chris Perkins. Perkins says the biggest challenge was balancing school security with providing a suitable atmosphere for students. Lynchburg City Schools has one student resource officer for every middle and high school in the district, Franklin County Schools just added additional school resource officers and Danvile City Schools recently upgraded its surveillance system.
Roanoke City schools announce new principals for upcoming school year
ROANOKE, Va. - Roanoke City Schools announced it will have four new principals for the upcoming school year. Frazier has nearly three decades of education experience, including four years as a high school principal. At Lucy Addison Middle School, Andy Wheeling is now the man in charge. Not all of the new principals are external hires, at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, Bradley Jenkins is now the principal. She has served as a special education teacher at William Fleming High School and most recently was the assistant principal at James Madison Middle School.
