The longtime NBA guard is thrilled to be back in the college game, heading a men's basketball program that he thinks can once again be a national powerhouse. Cooke scored 17 points, hitting five of six 3-point attempts, to lead top-seed South Carolina to a 76-65 win over fifth-seeded Georgia Tech on Sunday and reach the Elite Eight. The South Carolina coach praised Fortner's positivity, which is something Georgia Tech needed when they hired her in 2019. Fortner provided that and had Georgia Tech reach its second-ever Sweet 16 in her second season. South Carolina built a 10-point lead before Georgia Tech scored the final six points of the half to only trail 39-35 at the break.

6 officials out of NCAA Tournament after 1 tests positive
The coliseum is one of six venues hosting NCAA Tournament games later this week. One referee tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him and five others who went out to dinner with him, out of the tournament. Though the NCAA brought plenty of backup referees, the mass departure served up yet another illustration of how things can go wrong. “It's not ever going to be perfect in a pandemic,” NCAA vice president Dan Gavitt said. Iona took its two tests in the same day, and Gavitt said the change had been OK'd by the NCAA medical advisory group and the local health department.

Mike Young named ACC Coach of the Year, Cavaliers’ Hauser named to All-ACC 1st team
In his second year with the Hokies, Young guided a team picked for an 11th-place finish in the preseason to a No. 3 seed ties the highest Virginia Tech has ever earned in the ACC Tournament. Young’s selection marks the third time the ACC Coach of the Year honoree has come from Virginia Tech and the first time since 2008 (Seth Greenberg). Wright is the second Georgia Tech player to earn ACC Player of the Year honors and the first since Dennis Scott in 1990. Wright, who ranks sixth in the league in blocked shots with 38, also earned a spot on this year’s All-ACC Defensive Team.
Hauser, Clark lift No. 13 Virginia past Georgia Tech, 64-62
13 Virginia survived a scare before rallying to beat Georgia Tech 64-62. Kihei Clark scored only two points for 10-2 Virginia, but they came on a short jumper with 1:09 left that broke a 62-all tie. They’re really good at playing with great confidence, they play fast and they’re quick. What I saw down the stretch is, I thought our on-ball defense really stepped up. They played really good defense, but I think we could get some of what we wanted.
ODAC Hoops: Roanoke men win conference opener, Lynchburg women fall to Bridgewater
ROANOKE, Va. – After losing its season opener to Greensboro on Wednesday, the Roanoke College Maroons opened up ODAC play with much more intensity, leading to a 66-55 win over Hampden-Sydney. The Maroons, who were picked 4th as preseason favorites, welcomed the return of former Northside Viking Kasey Draper who made his season debut--tallying 16 points and 10 rebounds. At the Hive in Lynchburg, the women opened up ODAC play with Bridgewater. On the road, the Ferrum women also came up short to Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets saw 4 players notch double-digit scoring performances including Cheridan Hatfield who lead with 16 points and Aimee Debell who added 15 points and 19 rebounds.

Roanoke Women fall in ODAC tournament semifinal
SALEM, Va. – Saturday’s ODAC tournament semifinals proved to be competitive matchups. On the women’s side, Roanoke College and Guilford College were back and forth in the final quarter before the Quakers could pull away for the 66-61 victory. On the men’s side, Roanoke College had a chance to take the lead with just seconds remaining. But a missed shot led to a 60-59 Randolph-Macon victory. The Yellow Jackets will play Virginia Wesleyan in the championship, after the Marlins defeated the Hornets of Lynchburg.
Virginia snaps 3-game skid with 63-58 win over Georgia Tech
ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) – Jay Huff and Mamadi Diakite scored 17 points apiece as defending national champion Virginia snapped a three-game losing streak with a 63-58 win over Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers finally regained their winning touch after dropping out of The Associated Press ranking for the first time since November 2017. Virginia led by as many as 14 in the second half, and held on after Yellow Jackets ripped off a 9-0 run to make a game of it. Georgia Tech lost its fourth straight home game despite 20 points from Jose Alvarado. The Yellow Jackets haven’t won at McCamish Pavilion since Dec. 4.
