LYNCHBURG, Va. – A drive-thru ‘thank you’ for local veterans. Lynchburg Parks and Recreation hosted its Annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon Thursday. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, service men and women drove through a flag-lined parade route at Miller Park, featuring groups waving from a distance and live music. The annual event began in 1998 after a service member asked for a favor. “It started from somebody asking where they could get a cup of coffee, and they decided to honor the veterans each year,” said Ronnie Tucker, community recreation planner at Lynchburg Parks & Rec.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The City of Lynchburg is partnering with local nonprofits and Virginia’s Health Equity Taskforce to provide COVID-19 relief to residents. Nearly 20,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and masks will be distributed at Miller Park Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.About a dozen nonprofits will also be on hand to help residents with financial obligations including utilities, rent and job assistance. A group called Lynchburg Cares is spearheading the event and organizers want residents to know that assistance is available to them. “We really want to target those communities and people who are traditionally underserved and have a harder time getting access to these things,” said Piper VanDePerre of Lynchburg’s Department of Emergency ServicesCOVID-19 protocols will be followed and attendees are asked to wear masks.

The commission developed the plan in an effort to provide safe voting sites during the coronavirus pandemic. The Wisconsin Elections Commission said in a memo Monday that all early voting sites were to have been designated by June 12; the plan for Fiserv and Miller Park was implemented Sept. 1. LYNCHBURG, Va. An anonymous donor has put up a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot at Lynchburg officers at the beginning of June. Authorities say the incident happened on June 1 around 10:45 p.m. when two officers were patrolling Park Avenue and Stuart Street in connection to protests near Miller Park. LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg’s Black Lives Matter chapter did not take a day off for the Fourth of July. Instead, it invited people to Miller Park for a discussion about Black independence. About a hundred people came to the rally, many of whom wore black in solidarity with the cause. “We possess so much strength, wisdom and knowledge,” said Glover-Tucker, while quoting a fellow Black Lives Matter Lynchburg member who recently passed away. “In our community, it’s time to start owning some stuff.”Hobson said home ownership is especially important because renting leaves communities at risk of displacement.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg police have arrested three more individuals in connection with protests that began Sunday night. Marshals Service took William Shanks, 29, of Lynchburg, into custody on the following charges in connection with Sunday night’s riot. MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Brewers say a man illegally entered Miller Park and caused minor damage to the playing field Tuesday morning. Brewers officials say the man was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after gaining access to the field. Milwaukee police said a 40-year-old man was arrested in the burglary and noted that the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m.Police said criminal charges will soon be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorneys Office. Both the Brewers and the police said the incident resulted in minor damage to Miller Fields playing surface. Miller Park has served as the Brewers home stadium since 2001.

LYNCHBURG, Va. Lynchburg is saving ash trees throughout the city. With help from the Virginia Department of Forestry, city leaders are treating ash trees in parks, cemeteries and other areas. Ash trees are known to have wood-boring beetles inside. Since then Lynchburg has removed over 100 ash trees planted in the right-of-way, roadways and city parks. Hagen said if you think you have an ash tree near your home, look for blonding bark spots.
