Cadets will drive through a series of checkpoints to be swabbed and then hold in a parking lot for the results. If negative, they’re cleared to move back into barracks; however, if the test comes back positive they’re sent to a hotel to quarantine. As the VMI experience is set in closer-quarters than the typical college experience, VMI EMS Director Col. Jay Williams said this is a critical step. We felt it was smart to have one consistent process, one consistent procedure, that every cadet went through,” Williams said.

Cadets were told to leave post back in the spring when the coronavirus pandemic first started and it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. One cadet, in particular, was so determined to get his studies in that he finished his spring semester in a tent outside his parents' home in Pennsylvania. “I just started doing school in a tent and it actually turned out pretty well,” said VMI cadet William Taylor. When VMI lets out in November, Taylor said he’s likely to finish his semester in North Carolina where his brother lives so he can get reliable Internet.

Binford Peay III said that academic instruction will move online beginning Monday, Nov. 23, in an effort to limit exposing cadets and families through the overlap of the pandemic and flu season. We must continue to work together to deliver on our mission,” said Peay. Cadets will return to post for the spring semester next year in 2021 on Jan. 17-18 and will begin classes on Jan. 21. VMI’s post was buzzing on Wednesday with tents going up and roads shutting down ahead of Pence speaking to the school’s cadets. “We’re excited to hear what he has to say and pass on his wisdom to our cadets,” said Wyatt. “He’s somebody who’s served in multiple administrations and has a lot to share with our cadets and who understands what our cadets are going through,” said Wyatt. Pence is expected to start speaking to cadets around 2 p.m. WSLS will livestream his speech on wsls.com and the WSLS 10 Facebook page.

I still think we have a very good plan to acculturate them to West Point and the Army, Buzzard said. At West Point, new cadets will be formally accepted into the Corps of Cadets after training.
