Roanoke College considering in-person, online options for commencement ceremonies
ROANOKE, Va. โ Roanoke College is deciding on whether to have a virtual or in-person commencement for the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 graduates. Ralph Northamโs executive order, which only allows for 25 people at college or university events, will make it impossible to safely hold in-person commencement ceremonies and Senior Week activities. College and university commencement ceremonies are not grouped with sports and entertainment venues in the current COVID-19 restrictions. Northam relaxes COVID-19 restrictions, officials said that in-person commencement ceremonies will be held at the Salem Football Stadium. Roanoke College will have live online video coverage of the ceremony for those who arenโt able to attend.

(AP Photo)YANGON โ Myanmar security forces cracked down on anti-coup protesters in the country's second-largest city on Friday, injuring at least three people, two of whom were shot in the chest by rubber bullets and another who suffered a wound on his leg. The man with an injured leg was later photographed in a cast that stretched from his foot to his knee. Earlier in the day, security forces in Yangon fired warning shots and beat truncheons against their shields while moving to disperse more than 1,000 anti-coup protesters. Security forces chased the protesters off the main road and continued to pursue them in the nearby lanes, as some ducked into houses to hide.

LYNCHBURG, Va. โ Tuesday marked day one of the second Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. Dr. David Richards, University of Lynchburgโs political science chair, said the process may be the same as the first trial, but he expects a speedier hearing this time. Senate Democrats need a two-thirds majority to find the former president guilty. Normal punishment would be removal from office, but of course, thatโs not on the table. So, a second thing that they could do to him is to strip his right to run for office again,โ explained Richards.

Virginia Tech town hall let students share concerns on COVID-19
BLACKSBBURG, Va โ With the increasing number of coronavirus cases in Montgomery County, Virginia Tech students want their concerns heard by school officials. University students got the chance to ask President Tim Sands questions about the current state of the coronavirus and its effect on the community on Friday. Some students expressed concerns about the impact of the university community on the town of Blacksburg with the increase in positive cases. โThe failure to control COVID-19 at Virginia Tech is a failure to the entire Blacksburg community and surrounding area. As for the fate of the spring semester, President Sands is expecting students to follow the model currently in place.
Jerry Falwell Jr. taking โindefinite leave of absenceโ from role as Liberty University President
Liberty Universityโs Board of Trustees requested that Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. take an โindefinite leave of absenceโ from his roles at the university, which include serving as president and chancellor. According to the university, Falwell Jr. has agreed and is taking his leave of absence effective immediately. Today, my colleagues and I on the Liberty University Board of Trustees and Jerry mutually agreed that it would be good for him to take an indefinite leave of absence. BLACKSBURG, Va. Virginia Tech held a Zoom call on Wednesday featuring Athletics Director Whit Babcock and Chief Medical Officer of Virginia Tech Athletics, Mark Rogers. Whit Babcock says there are upwards of 250 student-athletes currently in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech has also stressed the importance of educating student-athletes on safety measures to take when away from facilities. Virginia Tech campus has a good plan of getting people back to classes and mitigating risks. And with football in particular, Rogers mentioned that theyve been working closely with Virginia Tech engineering in designing enhanced face shields for players helmets.
University of Virginia moving classes online amid coronavirus concerns
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. โ The University of Virginia announced it is moving its classes online for at least the next few weeks. The university plans to reassess its decision after April 5, at the earliest, and periodically after that date. Currently, the university is on spring break and online classes will begin on Thursday, March 19. Although classes will be held online, the university, including university buildings and the Health System, will remain open. Faculty members will be hearing soon from their deans with more details pertaining to moving classes online.
