BEDFORD, Va – The man accused of setting the old Bedford Middle School on fire appeared in court Monday afternoon. Daniel Flint waived his rights to a preliminary hearing but is now facing a different burglary charge related to his alleged role in the fire along with a felony arson charge. The fire broke out on Jan. 23 of last year causing major damage to the old Bedford Middle School. Bedford’s Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance says the changed burglary charge is consistent with evidence that would have been presented if the preliminary hearing happened. The court expects these charges to be certified by a grand jury in April and will likely set a court date then.

Liberty High Schools seniors honored with a graduation garden
BEDFORD, Va. If youre driving past the old Bedford Middle School on Longwood Avenue, you may see some familiar faces on the lawn. Pictured on yard signs covering the lawn are the more than 170 graduating seniors from Liberty High Schools Class of 2020. The Minutemen Club is behind the graduation garden. Organizers told 10 News because of the pandemic they couldnt have their annual fundraiser this year and used the $3,000 to create yard signs and a banner instead recognizing the students. Then later parents and students can pick up their signs to keep.

Police are still looking for the person responsible for setting the school on fire. In pictures sent to 10 News, the person is carrying a backpack and you can only see the back of their head. Police say they’ve got proof this person tried multiple times to start a fire throughout different parts of the building. Officials say that they are still working with several agencies on this investigation, and insist that they have not given up.

Town of Bedford leaders keep promise to make 'The Loop' more walkable, unveil new benches, signs
BEDFORD, Va. - The town of Bedford has kept its promise to making the loop a more walkable area. On Monday, town leaders unveiled a new bench, signs and a trash can that will be placed around the old Bedford Middle School. Town leaders had until Monday to get the project done. With help from community members, a local artist sketched the design on the benches centered on the Peaks of Otter. Town leaders said more benches and bike racks will be popping up throughout downtown and to look for pictures and announcements on Facebook.
Architects design the new Bedford Middle School as a 'school of the future'
BEDFORD (WSLS 10) - Architects are finalizing plans for a new Bedford Middle School. The school will be built next to Liberty High School. When Bedford reverted from a city to a town, a new middle school was part of the agreement. The Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved $44 million for the new middle school and a new, upgraded gym at Liberty High School. Construction of the new middle school is expected to start this fall.
