BLUE RIDGE, Va โ€“ Itโ€™s been a year like no other for the Layman Family as they prepare for their farmโ€™s annual fall festival. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Layman Family Farmsโ€™ Owner Eric Layman wasnโ€™t always sure it was going to be able to happen, but it is set to begin Saturday thanks to the help of some minor modifications. Itโ€™s going to actually feel like fall,โ€ said Layman. Some activities just canโ€™t happen because of COVID-19 restrictions, but all the classic favorites will still be in full swing. Layman said he and his family are just happy to welcome people back to celebrate fall.

BLUE RIDGE, Va. - In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, a local farm raised money Sunday by showing off their pink pumpkins. Layman Family Farms grows these pumpkins that are actually pink. Every year, they donate $1 for each admission ticket sold to the local chapter of Susan G. Komen. Unfortunately, there weren't as many pink pumpkins this year due to the summer's extreme heat, but hundreds of people still came out to support the cause. Over the past seven years, the farm has been holding the event, they've raised $12,000 to $15,000.

Hot, dry weather creating concern for some farmers

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. - At Jeter Farm, the rush is on to get the pumpkins out of the field. "The heat and the dry weather is kind of taking the vines back and that's why we're getting out here picking them really quick before the sun burns them," Jeter Farm co-owner Ned Jeter Jr. said. "It's been so dry, we're not producing enough hay for the upcoming winter season," said Jeter. Less hay means corn has to be used to feed cattle, which means less corn he can sell. I've seen a lot of dry farms, but this farm, we've had just about the perfect amount of rain," Layman Family Farms owner Eric Layman said.
