We’re now in week three and we still have a number of teams that are undefeated. That includes our Game of the Week matchup between Parry McCluer and James River.

Parry McCluer hosted Eastern Montgomery girls in the Pioneer District championship Friday night. The Fighting Blues won in double overtime 55-51.

Parry McCluer took down Bath County, 33-17.

The Green Wave washed away the Fightin’ Blues, 32-0.

This is always a big rivalry game, and Friday’s wasn’t short of a nail-biter.

Mike Cartolaro is putting up his whistle for good but will remain athletic director.

Carroll County girls also advanced to the Class 3 Championship.

Landon Catlett was recently awarded the WSLS "1st and 10 Josh Leonard Character, Courage and Commitment" award.

The Maroon Tide travel to Holston for a Class 1 VHSL State semifinal.

Top region seed Galax used a couple of first half scores and a dynamic defensive effort to win the Region 1C title over Parry McCluer 14-0. Javonte Reeves rushed of a first half score and quarterback Ian Ashworth hit Ayden White for a second quarter touchdown pass to account for the scoring. The Maroon Tide (10-2) bottled up the power ground game led by RB John Snider in check throughout the game. Th Blues finish the season 9-4. Galax moves on to take on Region 1D champion Holston in the state semifinals.

Parry McCluer and Galax are two programs with proud postseason histories, but the Maroon Tide history is more recent.

Two of the Mountain Empire District’s top teams met again on Friday night, this time with a trip to the Region 1C final on the line.

In the second quarter of James River’s game verus Parry McCluer Friday, the Knights got on the board, and they needed the extra point to tie it up. Kicker Morgan Marshall hurried out to the field for the point after attempt.

A big moment of the night in this game was James River’s first female kicker scoring.

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The last time Parry McCluer boys basketball was in a state title game, Talen Roberts wasn’t even born yet. Head coach Mike Cartolaro helped lead Saturday’s opponent Altavista to four state championships before returning to his alma mater in 2016. “You go a day at a time, a game at a time, you set your goals and try to accomplish those,” Cartolaro said. “It is kind of strange, it’s a game between us and them and I have to keep it that way,” Cartolaro said. Tip is at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Parry McCluer.

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Parry McCluer football is coming off a 7-5 season and a second round playoff loss to Narrows. The Blues have been a playoff team for eight straight seasons, so they're familiar with the postseason push. This year, they're hoping to overcome the loss of 16 seniors and keep the winning ways in Buena Vista. "I think our biggest asset right now is we all know everybody, we're a close team," senior Holden Kerr said. It's painful sometimes but I think that's a big part of it, teaching everybody to be tough," he said.

ROANOKE, Va. – The Northside boys remain perfect on the year, downing Hidden Valley 61-36 to win the Region 3D championship. At Eastern Montgomery High School George Wythe outlasted Covington to win the 1C title. Elsewhere the Parry McCluer girls win the 1C title over Galax and William Fleming's girls win their semifinal in Region 5D over Mountain View 75-50.
