ROANOKE, Va. – Magna Vista found itself in the Region 3D Tournament on Monday night against William Byrd. But William Byrd outscored Magna Vista 24-6 in the second quarter. William Byrd won 71-41, advancing to the Region 3D Quarterfinals to take on Northside on Tuesday at 6pm. On the ladies side, William Fleming notched a big 68-21 win over visiting Brooke Point in the Region 5D Quarterfinals. Next up for the Colonels is a Region 5D Semifinal matchup with cross-town rival Patrick Henry, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Magna Vista's Hairston tosses his way to Week 10 honors
DANVILLE, Va. - The Piedmont district lead was on the line Friday night, and two perennial powers delivered another thriller in Danville. Warriors quarterback Dryus Hairston triggered a Magna Vista surge that broke a 14-all tie with G.W, Danville, producing two touchdowns in the final 9 minutesHairston finished with a 17-32 evening thru the air for 260 yards and 3 touchdowns. He added a rushing touchdown, and a two point conversion pass in the Warriors 28-14 win. The junior quarterback threw touchdown passes of 29, 24 and 13-yards in putting Magna Vista atop the Piedmont district. For his efforts Dryus Hairston is our Week 10-1st and 10 Player of the Week.
Area high schools participate in summer football passing league
That's the mindset high school football teams in our area have taken on. While it's summer, many have found a way to be productive on the gridiron by participating in the Smith River Sports Complex 7-on 7 Passing League. Two-time state champion Magna Vista and Bassett are two teams that compete each of the five weeks that the league runs. Since this is strictly a 7-on-7 passing league, teams are presented with unique challenges -- ones they hope to benefit from and carry into the regular season. Ahead of the game -- the feeling every team wants to have in two months as a new high school football season kicks off.
