BUENA VISTA, Va. – An 11-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was hit by a car Friday evening, according to the Buena Vista Police Department. Authorities said the crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. on Magnolia Ave on Route 501. The driver of the car didn’t leave the scene after the boy was hit, the police department said. Officials airlifted the boy to the UVA Medical Center, but authorities said his medical status is unknown. According to police, there are no charges at this time.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A 9-year-old Minnesota boy was bitten by a shark as he body surfed in Miami Beach over the weekend, his parents said. Kristine Weiskopf told WPLG she and her son Jay were in the water for only a few minutes when the shark bit the boy. A Miami Beach Fire Rescue crew took the child to the hospital where surgeons closed the large wound, his mother said. That he’s gonna be OK,” the child’s father, Ren Weiskopf told the TV station. I don’t know if it’s just because of spring break of whatever, but the beach should be closed,” Ren said.

On Saturday morning, a 12-year-old boy courageously protected his 73-year-old grandmother Linda Ellis during a violent home invasion, according to WRAL. He shot and killed one of two masked men who had forced their way into his grandmother’s apartment demanding money, investigators said. One of the suspects, 19-year-old Khalil Herring, was armed and allegedly shot Ellis. The 12-year-old then shot at the men, hitting Herring, who was found nearby and later died of his injuries. “She’s been here for so many years who would’ve thought someone would come in here and do that,” said Ellis’ great-niece Chiquita Coley.

SALT LAKE CITY A police department vowed Tuesday to cooperate with multiple investigations of the shooting of a 13-year-old autistic boy by officers in the Salt Lake City area. The Salt Lake City Police Department said the officers were called to a home in Glendale, Utah, Friday night with a report of a boy who had threatened people with a weapon. The boy reportedly ran and was shot by an officer after being pursued by police. No weapon was found Friday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Salt Lake Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a statement late Sunday that the shooting was a tragedy and called for a swift and transparent investigation.
