ROANOKE, Va – Flower shops in the Star City are gearing up for what they say will likely be the busiest Valentine’s Day yet. George’s Flowers is celebrating its 40th Valentine’s Day in Roanoke this year. Each year the shop brings in two large trucks to help deliver flowers across the city. George’s Flowers brings in a dozen contracted drivers to help with Valentine’s Day deliveries each year. Clements says they have been letting customers know about the potential delays for the last week or so.

On Friday, 10 News caught up with the owner, George Clements. He believes the boom in business is because less people are visiting with each other in person and therefore opting for delivery options. “For the fact that they can’t go visit their mom, their grandmama, so they want to make sure they have flowers and it’s nice that they can give us a call, or order online, and have that accomplished…”They have somewhere around 500 deliveries over the course of this Mother’s Day weekend.

- A Mississippi prosecutor confirms he will seek the death penalty for a man indicted in the 2018 shooting deaths of two police officers. Marquis Flowers, 26, on Tuesday made his first appearance in state court since being indicted on capital murder charges, and he pleaded not guilty. District Attorney Dee Bates said after Tuesday's hearing that he will pursue the death penalty. Harrington testified that Flowers had already been wounded by gunfire before officers arrived, but police found nobody else at the scene. Flowers' parole was revoked after the Brookhaven officers were killed and he is in custody in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

ROANOKE, Va. - Dozens of people just walking around downtown Roanoke on Wednesday got a sweet-smelling surprise. George's Flowers teamed up with the Berglund Center to pass out 2,000 flowers to unsuspecting people. The random acts of kindness effort is happening nationwide to help people spread more smiles and less stress. "I just had someone from the city telling me how there were only two people in her department today and how it had been a really rough day. This is the fifth year for Petal it Forward but the first time it's happened in Southwest Virginia.
