ROANOKE, Va. – A viral star with a passion for rescuing shelter pets visited the Roanoke Valley SPCA Thursday night for a fundraiser. Kris Rotonda of Jordan’s Way grew social media fame after spending 72 hours sleeping in an animal shelter. In his new initiative, Rotonda is visiting every state in the U.S. to raise money and awareness for homeless and unwanted pets, and his first stop in Virginia will be the Roanoke Valley SPCA. “We are thrilled to be chosen as one of only five shelters featured from the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Denise Hayes, chief executive officer of the Roanoke Valley SPCA. He has seven more shelters in Virginia to visit.

ROANOKE, Va. – This local shelter knows that pets have to eat too, even though the coronavirus pandemic has left many families in a financial bind. The Roanoke Valley SPCA announced they will have a monthly drive-thru pet food pantry to help those in the community. It will take place at the Roanoke Valley SPACA parking lot on the second Sunday of each month from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Staff and volunteers will ask for basic information on your pet and put food in the back seat or trunk. The first event will be on Sunday, Oct. 11 in the shelter parking lot.

ROANOKE, Va. – Clear The Shelters has returned for 2020, and there is more time than ever to find the perfect pet this year. ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Valley SPCA has a new air filtration system that also protects staff and pets from COVID-19. The animal shelter just got a new Global Plasma Solutions filter for its HVAC system over the winter. The shelter’s CEO said she was relieved knowing that the volunteers, staff and animals will be healthy. “Doing the best we can at all times and being able to provide something of this caliber has been really exciting,” said Roanoke Valley SPCA CEO Denise Hayes. The shelter is open by appointment only so that people can adopt cats or dogs looking for a forever home.

ROANOKE, Va. – A local animal shelter is reminding you to think about your pets as the coronavirus spreads. Most local shelters have very little space and likely would not be able to take in very many pets. SPCA Executive Director Denise Hayes said that one way you can help is by signing up to be a foster. While pets can get the coronavirus, it’s different than the human version. The shelter has also been working with other shelters to come up with a plan in case a shelter staff member gets sick.

ROANOKE, Va. – You once again have the option to adopt a cat or dog from the Roanoke Valley SPCA. Leaders cut the ribbon on the building Thursday afternoon after two months of repairs. The building had been open for cat adoptions for a week, but Thursday’s ceremony marked the return of dogs to the complex. The Roanoke Valley SPCA needed $300,000 to fix structural problems with the building and to replace a broken HVAC system. “It has been great today to finally cut the ribbon and welcome everyone back to the revitalized shelter," said Roanoke Valley SPCA CEO Denise Hayes.

ROANOKE, Va. – Walking through Roanoke Valley SPCA, you’ll see lots of cat and dogs. “It’s pretty dangerous for both the people here and the animals," Hayes said. That’s why the SPCA needs people to adopt or foster all 40 animals in the shelter by December 18. “This should be a long-term solution, but if we don’t address it now, it will get to the point where we cannot occupy the building," Cresswell said. ROANOKE, Va. - Local animal shelters now have more room at a busy time of year thanks to another successful Clear The Shelters event. WSLS partnered with the Roanoke Valley SPCA and Lynchburg Humane Society Saturday to bring awareness to the need for pets to be adopted. The Roanoke Valley SPCA got 35 pets adopted, 33 on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Lynchburg Humane Society got 42 pets adopted Saturday. Since 2015, 250,000 pets have been adopted thanks to Clear The Shelters.

The national Clear the Shelters event encouraged people to adopt pets in animal shelters with waived or reduced adoption fees. This year, both the Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Lynchburg Humane Society saw crowds searching for pets that needed a home. The Roanoke Valley SPCA started Saturday with more than 50 pets available for adoption. The Lynchburg Humane Society had 42 adoptions Saturday. WSLS partnered with the Lynchburg Humane Society and the Roanoke Valley SPCA for the Clear the Shelters campaign.

There's a pet for everyone at the Roanoke Valley SPCA. This weekend is your chance to adopt and make sure animal shelters across Southwest Virginia have enough space to save other strays. Denise Hayes, shelter's CEO, is hoping every one of the 50 cats and dogs at the shelter will find loving homes during Saturday's annual Clear the Shelters event. WSLS is parterning with the Lynchburg Humane Society and the Roanoke Valley SPCA for the national Clear the Shelters campaign. Last year, 35 pets were adopted at the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
