I was healthy, Nelson said. I was completely fine.The week prior, she had lost her sense of smell and taste, but back then, those werent recognized as official COVID-19 symptoms. Its going on four months now.Nelson said she has meticulously documented her symptoms for months. You just dont know if youre going to be unlucky.Her advice to others is to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.
VDOT announces Lynchburg District employee tests positive for the coronavirus
LYNCHBURG, Va. โ A person working in VDOTโs Lynchburg District has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. The Lynchburg District contains Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward counties, as well as Danville and Lynchburg. Those who worked with this person have been notified, and any facilities impacted were immediately closed for cleaning and disinfecting according to CDC guidelines, according to Paula Jones with VDOT. Those facilities will reopen only when all protocols are completed.
End of an era: Tanglewood Mall marquee comes down
ROANOKE, Va. โ โI really felt sad,โ Vicky Nelson said about the Tanglewood Mall marquee coming down. As people walked in and out of the Tanglewood Mall on Tuesday, they couldnโt help but notice the crane rising above the mallโs giant marquee. โI began shopping here at Tanglewood Mall for many, many decades. โI do hope that it will be renovated and we can come here for shopping for many years to come," Nelson said. Appalachian Power proposing power grid upgrade projects in Central Virginia
Appalachian Power is holding informational meetings about upgrading its transmission network in Campbell, Amherst, Appomattox and Nelson counties. Officials tell 10 News the Central Virginia Transmission Reliability project will take several years. This project will help provide reliable power to property owners nearby. This will give us a chance to talk to property owners for the first time. Appalachian Power will hold another meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Amherst County High School.
50 Years After Camille: What if it happened again?
ROANOKE, Va. - 50 years later, Camille is still remembered as one of the worst, if not the worst, storms to impact any part of our area. That's about as much rain as we've seen in all of 2019 so far. If half of what fell over Massies Mill fell over the Roanoke Valley, the Roanoke River would rise to about 40 feet. Camille is still the flood of record for the Maury River in Buena Vista, though. He tells 10 News that, at the time, there was "...1957 technology with a radar in Washington DC and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Back to School changes parents need to know about
ROANOKE, Va. - The first day of school is Wednesday, August 7 for many districts including Appomottox, Carroll, Grayson, and Nelson counties and Martinsville city. Virginia changed the age for getting a Tdap booster shot. To align with current ACIP recommendations, the 2019 General Assembly passed HB 2215 that changes the grade in which students receive Tdap vaccine from sixth to seventh grade. Students who received a Tdap immunization at age ten will not need another Tdap vaccine to enter seventh grade. He says establishing a routine is important and you should start a week or two before school starts.
About 1,000 Wintergreen property owners ready for Atlantic Coast Pipeline lawsuits
About 1,000 homeowners at Wintergreen resort said they will sue the Atlantic Coast Pipeline if it begins work without compensation on land they communally own. Right now, plans from the Atlantic Coast Pipeline have it going through Wintergreen mountain and across Fenton's property. Dominion Energy is one of the partner companies of Atlantic Coast Pipeline, LLC. "Once that happens then that's the last road block for Dominion and they can start work," said John Clayman with the Wintergreen Property Owners Association. 10 News reached out to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline media contact, but did not receive an immediate response to our inquiry.
One more arrested in Operation Ice Breaker
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. โ The Amherst County Sheriff's Office announced another arrest as a result of Operation Ice Breaker. Granville Willard Smith IV, 34, of Amherst, is charged with distribution of a Schedule I or II controlled substance. He was taken into custody in Nelson County and was released on bond. The operation is looking to tackle the methamphetamine problem in the region, according to Sheriff E.W.
