The Auburn Eagles hosted the Giles Spartans in this New River Valley bout where it was all Spartans Friday night.

In the Class 2 State Semifinals, Glenvar defeated Gate City 3-0. The Highlanders will face the winner of East Rockingham and Poquoson.

The defending Class 2 state champion Glenvar Highlanders faced Appomattox County in the 2C Region final. The Highlanders swept Appomattox 3-0 for the Region 2C title.

Giles volleyball beat Eastern Montgomery 3-0 to advance to the Region 1C Volleyball Championship. They will face Auburn, who beat Covington 3-0.

The 2021 tennis season ended with a bang for then-junior Ashley Parsons, as she won the final singles match to clinch Auburn’s team state championship.

Auburn earned a 2020 co-championship after Covid canceled their state title game. This time they get to play the game.

Senior guard Ethan Millirons broke the all-time scoring record of 1,671 points set by Lowell Reed in 1966 on Thursday. The record has been in place for 56 years.

Auburn football is ready to add another championship to its extensive trophy case, this time under a new head coach. Cam Akers has joined Mark Dixon at Pulaski, leaving the vacancy for one of the youngest coaches in the area, David Seabaugh. While overall numbers are low for Auburn this season, Seabaugh plans to showcase his talent, while creating a new identity for the Eagles.

Auburn is proving they are once again a state force in Class 1 girls tennis.

Auburn beat Riverheads in three matches (25-15, 25-8, 27-25) on Friday to claim their second straight Class 1 volleyball state championship.

RINER, Va. – Under the VHSL’s Phase 2 guidelines, Auburn High School volleyball practice was pretty quiet. “We couldn’t touch a ball at all, we had to be 10 feet apart, we were pretty much just conditioning,” junior Anna McGuire said. Recently, Montgomery County agreed to move forward with the new Phase 3 guidelines, allowing the use of shared equipment. “I was super excited to actually be able to play even though its just hitting and passing,” junior Allyson Martin said. “You get to get out and see your friends every day so that’s fun, and we get to touch a volleyball and that’s what we love,” McGuire finished.

RINER, Va. – The VHSL announced Wednesday three plans for high school sports moving forward, none of which included football this fall as an option. Auburn has been conditioning for a week, working on sprints, agilities, lifting, and going over plays in the classroom. Head coach Cam Akers said that they will continue to work out until a final decision is made by the VHSL. “It’s obviously different than how we’d normally do things,” Akers said. But it’s nice to see these guys come out, be resilient through this time, and come out here and get back to work,” Akers said.

RINER, Va. – Last Thursday, the Auburn boys basketball team was patiently awaiting their 8 p.m. tip against Matthews in the Class 1 state basketball championship. “Once we saw the NCAA cancelled all their tournaments, we were like, oh no this isn’t good,” junior Reed Underwood said. “Then when we saw the VHSL cancelled all theirs, we realized, ours was probably next.”As they watched the Class 2 championship unfold, so did their fate. Auburn would be declared the Class 1 co-champions, and not play a game. “Then we were just like, we’re state champs, co-champs.”And as they rolled into the parking lot of the school that night, the Riner community was waiting.

RINER, Va. – Star point guard Ethan Millirons is the ultimate team player for Auburn High School. “I play as hard as I can, all I care about is winning the ball game. I needed to get stronger, I needed to improve my defense, improve shooting and everything,” he said. “He’s averaging 22 points a game, almost 5 assists a game, with a lot of attention thrown his way every game. We look to him to do a little bit of everything for us.”The Eagles are currently 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Empire District under head coach Terry Millirons, who happens to be the husband of volleyball coach Sherry Millirons.

RINER, Va. - A downed electrical pole has closed Route 8 in Montgomery County, according to VDOT. Authorities say the road is closed in Riner at Meadow Creek Road. Drivers should take an alternate route if possible, and should expect significant delays. According to Appalachian Power, more than 700 people are without power in the area. RINER, Va. - The Riner Volunteer Fire Department now has a new place to park its firetrucks. The Fire Department officially opened its new fire station along Route 8 on Thursday evening. The new facility was first planned in 2014, but the department did not purchase the land needed for the new station until 2016. Riner's new fire station is nearly 20,000 square feet, which is double the size of its previous home. The Fire Department's old building will eventually house the Riner Volunteer Rescue Squad.

RINER, Va. - The perennial power Auburn volleyball team is out to a 5-1 start. After a run to the Class 1 state semifinals a year ago, they're bringing back a familiar face who won them three consecutive state titles years ago. Sherry Milliron is back as head coach for the Eagles since retiring after Auburn's last state title. Her sister is Julie Conner, the head volleyball coach at Lord Botetourt. "I did not have the same conflicts I had four years ago," Milliron said about her decision to return.

RINER, Va. - Some local firefighters will soon have a new place to call home. Work on the new station for the Riner Volunteer Fire Department is nearly complete. Montgomery County Emergency Services Coordinator Neal Turner said the new station has been about four years in the making. "There's a lot of internal work going on: final painting, lights, receptacles, cabinetry in the kitchen and some of the work rooms and things of that nature," Turner explained. The station is expected to be complete by early fall.
