ROANOKE, Va. โ€“ Athletes including brothers and friends of Kawuan Ray came together to play flag football on Martin Luther King Jr. Day-- one of many sports that the former Roanoke Catholic and Patrick Henry star excelled at. Mondayโ€™s game was about more than just the love of sport, but rather the love of each other. "Kawuan Ray Day" (WSLS)That prompted Mondayโ€™s flag football event, a way to give back to the community while also providing support through the grieving process. โ€œI just know how great of a young man he was just by the effect he had on other young people in the community, his teammates, younger brothers and just his friends. So, itโ€™s like weโ€™re all going to carry the weight together, grieve together instead of doing it alone,โ€ said Thomas.

Danville:A student at George Washington High School has tested positive for coronavirus. The student has been participating in virtual learning and has not been on school property since Aug. 20. A student at Grove Park Preschool who was last in the building on Nov. 24. A student at Galileo Magnet High School who was last in the building on Nov. 24. There is no exposure within the school district.

Roanokeโ€™s Mayor hosts annual Leaโ€™s High School Winter Classic Tournament

ROANOKE, Va. โ€“ High school basketball players from around the Roanoke Valley played on Roanokeโ€™s largest stage this weekend. The annual tournament at the Berglund Center showcased the areaโ€™s largest rivalries, including William Fleming vs. Patrick Henry and North Cross vs. Roanoke Catholic. Lea said he organized the tournament to unite the city and the county through sports. Money received from the tournament will go to non-profits in the Roanoke Valley.

Roanoke Catholic not caught up in impressive win streak

ROANOKE, Va. - Like any good team, you can't let the wins and losses define you. But for the Roanoke Catholic football team, they've won 33 games in a row, their last loss dating back to the first game of the 2016 season. "It's just a matter of coming to work every day and trying to get better every day when we come to practice." We come in here every day ready to work and put it all out on the field and get ready for every week." But every week presents a new challenge and in a game where nothing is guaranteed, Roanoke Catholic returns home Friday night to host Norfolk Christian.

Low interest in football leads Bland County to cancel season

BLAND COUNTY, Va. - The lights will stay off and the stands will remain empty this fall in Rocky Gap. The Bland County High School football team is the latest example of the effects of the nationwide drop in interest in the sport. It was a very social event, Bland County School Board Vice Chair Gerry Schepers said. Interest in football nationwide is declining so it's not just a Bland County thing, Eastep said. Bland County is the third Virginia high school to cancel its varsity football season in the last two years.
