Inspire Brands Inc. said Friday that it is acquiring Dunkin' Brands Group Inc. for $11.3 billion, including the Dunkin’ Brands’ debt that Inspire will be taking on. The private-equity firm will pay $106.50 in cash for all of Dunkin' Brands' shares, which closed Friday at $99.71. Dunkin' Brands' stock surged to an all-time high earlier this week after the company confirmed the two were in merger talks. In addition to Buffalo Wild Wings and Arby's, it owns the Sonic burger chain, Jimmy John's restaurants and Rusty Taco.
Starbucks earnings top estimates as sales rebound quicker than expected in U.S., China
Starbucks on Thursday reported that sales in the U.S. and China are recovering from the coronavirus pandemic more quickly than expected, helping global same-store sales shrink just 9%. Excluding items, the coffee chain earned 51 cents per share, beating the 31 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by Refinitiv. In September, U.S. same-store sales fell just 4%, bolstered by the return of Pumpkin Spice Lattes. In China, Starbucks' second-largest market, the coffee chain's same-store sales declined by just 3%. Dunkin’ Brands Group said it’s in preliminary discussions with Inspire Brands, which also owns Arby’s and Jimmy John’s Sandwiches. Dunkin’ shares jumped $14.31, or 16.1% to close Monday at $103.10. Dunkin’ Brands revenue fell 20% in the second quarter, and the company said franchisees closed 200 restaurants permanently. Dunkin’ Brands reported full-year sales of $1.4 billion in 2019, up 4% from the previous year.

CNN A Dunkin' employee was arrested Friday after an Illinois State Trooper discovered mucus in his drink. Vincent J. Sessler, 25, was charged with disorderly conduct, reckless conduct and battery to a peace officer, according to Illinois State Police. The men and women of the Illinois State Police put their heart and soul into protecting the lives and rights of all people in this state every day," ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said in a statement. Immediately after the incident, the issue was investigated and Sessler was terminated from his job, a Dunkin' spokesperson told CNN. "Dunkin' has a deep appreciation for police officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe, and the franchise owner has reached out directly to the officer to apologize for the experience."

Dunkin has announced that it will be closing around 800 of its stores across the country. According to the companys second-quarter earnings report, low-earning stores will be affected. The 800 stores reportedly account for 8% of the companys US locations. Dunkin is looking at closing an additional 350 international locations. To improve growth, McDonald's has been adding digital menu boards to stores, expanding delivery options and investing in AI tech for its drive-thrus, among other things. For instance, Wendy's is adding breakfast to its menu, investing $20 million and adding about 20,000 employees for the initiative. Others, like Burger King, are exploring plant-based menu options. McDonald's has plant-based options internationally and is testing a Beyond Burger in Canada, but has yet to test a meat substitute in the United States.

Pizza Hut will sell the pie in a new, round pizza box, which it is also testing at the Phoenix location. It took two years to develop the box, said Nicolas Burquier, chief customer and operations officer for Pizza Hut. Kellogg and Pizza Hut recently partnered on another limited-time menu item, the Stuffed Cheez-It Pizza, which is designed to look like an oversized Cheez-It cracker. That collaboration led to a discussion about incorporating Incogmeato into the Pizza Hut menu, explained Marianne Radley, chief brand officer for Pizza Hut. The Garden pizza and round box will be sold together for $10.
