No use of the phrase ‘mask mandate’ could have been a political move by Gov. Northam
During Governor Ralph Northam’s 32-minute news conference Thursday, not once did he use the phrase ‘mask mandate’ while addressing the policy for grades K through 12 -- even when asked about it multiple times. That has many wondering if it was a political move ahead of November’s election.

You can run, jog or walk any time between April 5 and April 12 anywhere you’d like to take part in the Hollins Hustle Virtual 5k. “Will be used for all the teams across the department. Hopefully to advance our budgets a little bit to allow us to do a little bit more for the student-athletes and we’re working on a project to upgrade locker rooms to get rid of the old metal lockers to put in nice wood, open lockers and spruce those areas up for the student-athletes,” said athletic director Myra Sims. Registration is open thru March 31.
Human remains found on Hollins University’s campus
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Roanoke County police say someone found human remains on the campus of Hollins University on Tuesday afternoon. The remains are not connected to the university, according to police. As the investigation continues, authorities will remain on-site through Wednesday. Hollins University is cooperating with authorities and notified its students, faculty and staff about the police presence on campus.
Hollins opts out of basketball season, four spring sports
ROANOKE, Va. – Hollins University recently announced it will not be participating in any high risk spring sports--women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s indoor track and field or women’s lacrosse-- due to COVID concerns. This comes after it decided in December to opt out of the basketball season. Protocols that Hollins plans to continue to adhere to. When you’re not competing it’s hard to practice for weeks and weeks. A full time out so to speak, for what could be a great run for the Hollins next season.

Hollins University students are moving into new homes this week. After eight years of planning, fundraising and construction, the university opened Phase 1 of the new student apartment village. Hollins University set to open first phase of apartment village Monday
HOLLINS, Va. - Hollins University is introducing new student housing for the first time in 50 years. The university announced in an email on Thursday that Phase I of the school's new apartment village will open after eight years of planning, fundraising and construction. Officials said the village is meant to bring students closer to classes, dining, extracurriculars and sporting events. Phase I will consist of four buildings with eight units with 12 double rooms and 16 single rooms, accommodating a total of 40 students, according to officials. Officials said construction is set to start soon on Phase II, which will be made up of six buildings with 12 units, 16 double rooms and 24 single rooms, making a total 56 beds.
Hollins University president stepping down after two years
ROANOKE, Va. - Hollins University President Parenna Lawrence is stepping down. A letter posted Thursday by Alexandra Trower, chair of the university's board of trustees, confirmed the news. The board plans to announce an interim president shortly and assemble a search community for the university's new president. We offer our sincere thanks to President Lawrence for her dedicated service and contributions to the University. Very shortly, the Board of Trustees will announce an interim president, and over the summer we will appoint the Presidential Search Committee.
