The Sheriff’s Office said a call regarding a dead dog on the side of Raphine Road in the Gibbs Run area was reported on Jan. 27. When authorities arrived on the scene, they found a dog crate containing a dead German Shepherd with a blanket. Anyone with information is asked to call Deputy Capps at 540-463-7328. Authorities said a reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the dog’s death.

VCU fraternity served cease-and-desist order after death of student

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Police Department and VCU Police are working together to investigate the death of a VCU student that was found in an off-campus residence early Saturday. The university identified the student as Adam Oakes in a statement posted to Twitter Sunday afternoon. According to university officials, the Delta Chi fraternity’s national office issued a cease-and-desist order to the VCU chapter on Saturday, to which VCU took similar action on Sunday as a continuation of the investigation. In the statement, Delta Chi also encouraged all fraternity members to cooperate with law enforcement in the investigation. Virginia General Assembly passes bills to legalize marijuana, abolish death penalty, and more

VIRGINIA – The Virginia General Assembly convened on Friday and passed multiple bills that could impact Virginians across the Commonwealth, including a bill legalizing marijuana. Similar bills passed both the House and Senate after some debate. Both chambers also passed bills to abolish the death penalty. A Senate bill that would have prohibited someone convicted of domestic assault from buying, owning or transporting a firearm failed a vote. All bills passed by both chambers then hit Gov.

Journalists were among those hit by pellets during the confrontation, which came on the second day of peaceful demonstrations over Prude's death. Death investigation underway after a body was found slumped over a car in Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Henry County Police are investigating a death after they say they received a call in reference to an individual slumped over in a car behind The Scrub Board Laundry, located at 2038 Rives Rd., in Martinsville, Virginia. Upon arrival deputies located a deceased individual inside of a 1999 Honda Odyssey van. Henry County Sheriff’s Office investigators processed the car and conducted a cursory search of the immediate area. Wakeboarding accident reportedly led to death near Smith Mountain Lake

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – A Franklin County official has confirmed that someone died near Smith Mountain Lake on Saturday. The county’s public safety director, Billy Ferguson, said that the fatality happened near the area of Belle Isle Road and believes it was a wakeboarding accident. Death of Henry County inmate under investigation after attempted suicide

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Authorities are investigating the death of a female inmate after Henry County deputies say she attempted suicide Friday. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old inmate Delberia Alcorn attempted suicide by hanging herself with a bedsheet around 4:15 p.m. Friday. Before this incident, authorities say she did no exhibit any requiring her to be under any type of extra watch. Authorities say deputies immediately began CPR until the Henry County Department of Public Safety and the Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Squad arrived. Authorities are investigating the death of a female inmate after Henry County deputies say she attempted suicide Friday.

First coronavirus death in the U.S. happens in Washington state

According to NBC, Health officials in Washington state said on Saturday a coronavirus patient has died, NBC affiliate KING in Seattle reported. The death is the first from coronavirus illness COVID-19 in the United States. The U.S. so far has 66 cases of coronavirus, which includes 9 people who have recovered and four “presumptive” cases, which are those that tested positive in local tests with confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pending.

A 7-year-old boy has died after being hit by a trailer following a Christmas parade in Mount Juliet, TN. According to WPSD, Rowan, fell from the trailer and was struck in a parking lot after the parade. Captain Tyler Chandler with the Mount Juliet Police Department says he’s sad that such a joyous event ended in tragedy. “As you can imagine, anyone involved in an incident like this, everyone involved in an incident like this, extremely heartbroken. A candlelight vigil was held in Rowan’s honor on Sunday at Mount Juliet Middle School.

State police investigate a deadly car crash that resulted in the death of a woman in Henry County

HENRY CO., Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a single-car crash that resulted in the death of a woman. The crash happened Saturday morning on Route 687 in Henry County. The driver of the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, striking a large boulder tree. Taylor was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and died at the scene. The crash is under investigation.

HENRY CO., Va. – Police are investigating a deadly car crash that resulted in the death of two people. The crash happened Friday around 4:58 p.m. on Route 793. A 2017 Ford Explorer was traveling north on the route when the car was struck by a falling tree. The explorer then ran off the left side of the road and struck a pole and several trees. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Sesame street – Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer and actor behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, died Sunday. According to NBC News, he died at his home in Connecticut, according to a press release from Sesame Workshop. Spinney had worked on the beloved cartoon show for 50 years, serving as the puppeteer for Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the show’s premiere in 1969. “Caroll Spinney gave something truly special to the world. With deepest admiration, Sesame Workshop is proud to carry his memory – and his beloved characters – into the future.”

Rocky Mount police investigating a Friday night death at a home

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – Rocky Mount police say they are investigating a death that happened in the North Main Street area late Friday night. The man was taken to the Western Virginia Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke for autopsy. Investigators say they are expected to receive the official report later this week. The man’s name and address will not be released until next of kin is notified. Rocky Mount police say, “there is no reason to believe there is a threat to the community.”Anyone with information should call the department at 540-483-9275.
