AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - Sheriff E. W. Viar confirms to 10 News that the suspect and victim in Tuesday's deadly shooting are father and son. Chis Austin, 47, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his father, 83-year-old John Austin. UPDATE (8:52 p.m. Oct. 1, 2019)Authorities say John Austin of Madison Heights is the victim of Tuesday's homicide in Amherst County. He is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Shortly after 3 p.m., the Amherst County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of gunshots in the 100 block of Riverview Road in Madison Heights.

Drivers asked to find alternate route after hydraulic fluid spills on Rt. 130 in Amherst County

18-year-old charged with killing 92-year-old Amherst County woman
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - The Amherst County Sheriff's Office has arrested the 18-year-old man it says shot and killed a 92-year-old woman and also shot her 74-year-old daughter. Early Wednesday morning, authorities arrested Justin Jay Sales, charging him with first-degree murder, malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. During the two weeks since the shooting, investigators, along with members of the ATF, Virginia State Police and the Campell County Sheriff's Office have worked to identify and arrest Sales. One more arrested in Operation Ice Breaker
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – The Amherst County Sheriff's Office announced another arrest as a result of Operation Ice Breaker. Granville Willard Smith IV, 34, of Amherst, is charged with distribution of a Schedule I or II controlled substance. He was taken into custody in Nelson County and was released on bond. The operation is looking to tackle the methamphetamine problem in the region, according to Sheriff E.W.
