Carilion Clinic’s recommendations for making 2021 New Year’s resolution

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The New Year is a time for making changes, but many people don’t always follow through with their resolutions. Betty Robertson, a registered nurse and Carilion Clinic Community Health Educator, recommends writing your goals down once you set them. “We need to be more vigilant with washing our hands going forward, covering our mouth and noses to help prevent infection. Not only for ourselves, but for our community,” Robertson said. Most resolutions are related to diet and exercise, mental health, finance, work and relationships.

Weather apparently doesn’t believe in “New Year, new me”; same ol’ rain to start 2021

As the ball drops on 2020, rain will begin to increase from the south with temperatures in the 40s. The bulk of cold air will stay north, meaning that’s where there’s the better chance of wintry weather. We’re in the middle of the two, where we’ll see periods of rain through New Year’s Day and temperatures in the 40s. New Year's Day weather pattern - 2021However, there may be just enough cold air to start things out as freezing rain in areas north of I-64 Friday morning. FutureTracker - midday New Year's DayOnce the rain clears out early Saturday morning, a warming breeze will develop from the west.

2021 to start off with (another) soaking rain in southwest, central Virginia

Hourly planner for Tuesday, December 29, 2020We’ll be in the 40s again Wednesday, but clouds will gradually increase ahead of our next storm system. This system dives south, picking up Gulf moisture. That Gulf moisture does indeed make it this far north. If there’s any freezing rain to start, it would likely be brief in northern portions of the area Friday morning. Impacts from New Year's storm systemBeyond this storm system, we’re actually left unseasonably warm through Saturday.
